In the latest @wola-org.bsky.social Border Update:
The U.S. military operation to extract Nicolás Maduro has changed little for Venezuelan migrants. Updates about smuggling and stranded migrants in Mexico. Updates about new border barriers.

From @wola-org.bsky.social:
The Trump administration has not ruled out having military “boots on the ground” in Venezuela.
What would that entail? Shouldn’t Congress have a say? That’s what the War Powers Resolution, up for a Senate vote this week, is all about. 🧵
(1/12)
Congress should reassert its war powers and demand accountability. In this uncertain context, it must be a priority to protect civilians, respect their right to protest, and unconditionally release political prisoners.
These actions set a dangerous precedent for the region and revive gunboat diplomacy. WOLA calls for an end to unilateral U.S. actions and support for a negotiated, democratic transition.
This strike follows a troubling pattern. Since Sept. 2025, WOLA has denounced 32 U.S. military attacks in the region and at least 115 deaths, which amount to extrajudicial killings and unjustified unilateral use of force.
Venezuelans voted overwhelmingly for democratic change in July 2024—yet their will was ignored, followed by increased repression, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
WOLA has long condemned Maduro’s authoritarian abuses while advocating for a U.S. policy grounded in human rights and democracy.
These actions were taken without Congressional authorization and violate U.S. constitutional limits and international law. Read WOLA’s full statement here: www.wola.org/2026/01/mili...
🚨 After months of military buildup, on Jan. 3, 2026, U.S. forces carried out strikes in #Venezuela and President Trump announced the capture of authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro. Casualties remain unknown. 🧵
From @wola-org.bsky.social: "Venezuelans deserve a peaceful transition to democracy and respect for their fundamental rights. Nonetheless, unilateral U.S. military action, in violation of standards that have guided the international order for nearly a century, is reckless and dangerous."

The attacks in Southcom's area of operations dishonor what former commanders dedicated their careers to upholding: a democratic, rules-based order, the well-being of the personnel they command, and the US Constitution's supremacy.
It would be good to hear from them now. (5/5)
We won't name names, but the list of former commanders is at bit.ly/4ndBdpD.
We know it is unusual for former senior officers to comment on current military issues. But these are not normal times, as Adm. Holsey's abrupt resignation makes clear. (4/5)
US assets are directly violating human rights and US laws governing war powers and who is a "combatant." These former commanders should be troubled by the illegal attacks happening right now. (3/5)
@WOLA_org has had respectful, productive contact with nearly all former commanders. While its human rights record has never been perfect, @Southcom has done more than other commands, including a 30-year-old Human Rights Initiative and outreach to experts and advocates. (2/5)
