Our booklet has been published, offering a detailed exploration of the housing stock, socio-economic conditions, and Airbnb impact in Budapest and Vienna. You can also read more in-depth analyses of districts 10 and 15 in Vienna, and districts 7 and 8 in Budapest, focusing on the Gründerzeit stock.
Day 20, Global Trend: Urban segregation isn’t just rising or falling, it’s changing where it comes from. In cities like Budapest, it’s increasingly driven by the divide between the historic core and the rest, while in Vienna, differences within areas are becoming more important. #30DayChartChallenge
Day 17, Remake: Last year, we looked at housing prices in Budapest; this year, we have shifted our focus to Vienna, zooming in on medium-sized apartments built before 1960 across districts. The 1st district (Innere Stadt) clearly stands out from the rest. #30DayChartChallenge #Vienna
Day 14, Trade: Quick snapshot from Vienna (10th & 15th districts): we checked some apartments for sale in Gründerzeit architecture buildings. Even in this small, non-representative sample, there’s a clear pattern: 4th-floor units tend to come with slightly higher price tags. #30DayChartChallenge
Day 10, Pop Culture: Budapest streets named after famous writers, poets, artists, and actors — but do they come with a price tag? Turns out, not really. A twist: streets named after the Jókai–Laborfalvi couple are actually cheaper, even though they’re scattered across the city. #30DayChartChallenge
Day 8, Circular: We split Vienna into concentric rings and visualised Airbnb listings within each zone using donut charts. The result is striking: far from its original home-sharing purpose, Airbnb has become a playground for profit-driven large-scale investors. #30DayChartChallenge #Vienna

Let’s review the changes in the prices of medium-sized apartments across Vienna’s districts, based on data from sold properties. The rising apartment prices and the higher prices in Innere Stadt are clear. The apparent price drop in 2024 may result from distortions due to the small sample size.
Meet us in the 15th district on Parking Day! You can learn about our project TransHerit and participate in different activities to learn more about the historic housing of Vienna!

📏 For Day 23 of the #30DayChartChallenge, we used a log scale to show weighted average prices of sold apartments across districts in Budapest. Clear patterns of spatial inequality exist, with price gaps that raise important questions about accessibility and affordability. #housing #Budapest
⭐ For Day 22 of the #30DayChartChallenge, we explored the average Airbnb ratings in Vienna, broken down by district, quarter of the year, and property type. Some clear patterns emerged—location and property type matter more than you might think.

🏙️ For Day 20 of the #30DayChartChallenge, we animated the historical urban expansion and population growth of the two cities—capturing how 19th–21st century transformations shaped today's urban landscape. In the #Transherit project, we explore the intersection of urbanization and built heritage.
Day 19 of #30DayChartChallenge – Smooth 📈 We show the monthly number of Airbnb listings in Vienna with a smoothed trendline highlighting post-pandemic recovery and seasonal dips.
Tourism, housing, and heritage all intersect here—part of our #Transherit research project.

Day 17 of #30DayChartChallenge – Birds 🐦 A bird's eye view of population density in Budapest—capturing how people cluster in and around historic cores and new developments.
As part of our #Transherit project, we visualise how the city evolves.

Day 16 of #30DayChartChallenge – Negative 📊 A strong negative correlation (-0.8) between % of one-person households and % of dwellings occupied by their owner across urban quarters. What do you think of our photo negative?

Day 15 of #30DayChartChallenge – Complicated 🧩 We explore the relationship between Gründerzeit housing stock and the share of higher educated population at the quarter level in Vienna & Budapest. The trend is clearer in Vienna, but outliers still disrupt the pattern.

🎤Conference - Our team participated at the AAG, Detroit, USA (24.03-28.03.2025), where Dr. Sandra Guinand presented our research on the topic of “Private interventions in the historic housing stock of Vienna. Can we speak of financialization of 'heritage' preservation?” #AAG25 #Transherit
Day 14 of #30DayChartChallenge – Kinship
The Gründerzeit era (1848–1918) shaped Vienna and Budapest with rapid industrialization, leaving a lasting mark on their housing stock that still defines their character today. Echoes of an empire linger in brick and stone. 🏛️📜 #Gründerzeit #Budapest #Vienna
Day 13 of #30DayChartChallenge – Cluster.
Budapest’s one-person household patterns show strong spatial autocorrelation. Quarters with high percentages are surrounded by similar ones—and the same goes for areas with low percentages. Birds of a feather do flock together. 🏙️📊#Budapest
#30DayChartChallenge – Stripes 🏘️📊 We visualized Airbnb prices in Vienna’s districts, grouped by quarters. Part of our ongoing exploration in the #Transherit project, looking at housing and urban change. How do you think short-term rentals are reshaping Vienna?
#dataviz #Airbnb #housing #Vienna
Day 10 - Multimodal. For today’s #30DayChartChallenge, we’ve mapped the distribution of higher-educated residents (in %) across Budapest's quarters. The pattern is bimodal, with distinct peaks on both the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube. It even resembles the iconic Chain Bridge! 🌉 🇭🇺 #Budapest
