The "freedom to drive" actually means having zero choice. You are forced to buy, maintain, insure, fuel, and store a depreciating asset on repeat forever.
True mobility freedom is having safe, efficient, accessible alternatives, not surrendering your financial independence to car dependency.

"The more we have subsidized, greenwashed, and, yes, safety-washed, the American automobile over the course of the last century, the more our communities have been transformed to make space for them — and not for the better. Roads have gotten wider and longer and faster"
See y'all there! 🚲

TL;DR: Fast urban roads are a huge factor, and car bloat amplifies risk.
For the average person if you want to experience car culture:
walk into a coffee shop or fast food restaurant with a drive thru and see how many drivers get served before you do.
Now is a great time to start biking for transportation. Spring is here and gas is crazy expensive. Relax and ride a bike.
A woman kneels with a custom low-rider cruiser bike in front of colorful graffiti. She has long, dark curly hair and is wearing a black beanie, glasses , and large hoop earrings, and is dressed in a black sweatshirt and tan work pants. The bicycle is a silver-framed custom cruiser featuring painted shark graphics on the top tube and a bright pink floral arrangement near the handlebars. It has a long, low-profile frame, wide black tires, and a large chrome headlight.
A closer shot of the same woman and her bike, with a painting of a shark holding a teddy bear.
“There's so many reasons why people get on a bike. There was a guy who lost 300 pounds, joined a bike group, and never gained the weight back. Another guy, who lost his wife, and said once he joined a bike group, his whole outlook changed, because he thought before that. . .” 🧵
