#PhysicalMedia haul today. Super pumped for a lot of these, including The Rocketeer and an awesome Jurassic Park steel book

Yeah it's not great. One of the producers came out and more or less defended the ep, boiling down all of the correct criticism to "we don't think that showing an image of one stitch as an example of another undermines the message of the video", and "we didn't expect knitters to see this" lol

Maybe don't participate in deeply dismissive, misleading, poorly researched, and misogynist videos masquerading as "science"

Hank hosted a Sci Show segment about knitting that spent most of its runtime dismissing the millennia-long history of fiber arts, calling them boring lady hobbies that were figured out entirely by accident, and were only useful when science men decided to pay attention to them

Saw this in the grocery store earlier today, and when I did two very distinct things happened:

1) I heard the sickest guitar riff ever played on this or any other planet

2) I got instant heartburn

I appreciate your input! I also find that I tend to specify if I'm going out with a specific purpose, such as with your pharmacy example

I appreciate your response! And while I'd like to say this is for something important or monetary in some fashion, in reality I have ADHD and this question is what my brain decided to hyperfocus on today. I've always loved little differences like this, to me they're absolutely fascinating

Appreciate the response, neighbor from the north! I'm noticing from some other non-USian folks that "supermarket" is pretty uncommon with them as well. I wonder if it's more a specific country/regional term than I previously thought 🤔

That 100% makes sense. I asked a friend who grew up in a pretty rural area with few options, so it was always just "the store" for them as well. Thank you for your insight!

I feel like I only get specific when I have a very narrow, 1 stop trip in mind. Like going to Lowes for hardware needs, for example. Otherwise, me saying "I'm going to the grocery store later" could mean multiple places, but the overall trip is for groceries

Never heard of the "party store" thing until today, love that haha. Appreciate the response!

Interesting! I didn't expect to get a response from across the pond, I appreciate the insight!

As a professor of English, do you say "supermarket" or "grocery store" when talking generally about the retail place where the food lives? I'm working on something and trying to get as many answers to this as I can

Folks of BlueSky, I'm trying to figure something out. When you talk about the retail place where the food lives, do you say "grocery store" or "supermarket"? Or do you get specific with it i.e. Food Lion vs Wegmans? #linguistics

So I'm watching Bloodsport and just what exactly is Jackson's fighting style? Did one of the scouts see him knock a guy out in the parking lot of a tractor pull at the county fair and think "This guy definitely deserves to fight for the honor of being a champion of martial arts"?

This is not to dissuade people from using audiobooks or bashing the medium. But when we're living in a time where newspapers have to be published at a 4th grade level so the average reader can understand it, we need to be encouraging actual reading as much as possible.

Hot take: audiobooks do not count as reading. 57% of US adults read below a 6th grade level, and 41% can't read above a 4th grade level and are functionally illiterate. There is a difference between someone reading you a story and being able to read it yourself.

BlueSky is trying to monetize so let's show them some numbers:

Reskeet this if you refuse to pay for BlueSky+ until trust & safety decides to prioritize marginalized users.

That's $96 / year of lost revenue for each reskeet...

At the 100th anniversary of the Jamestown High School Acapella Choir Vespers concert. There are over 400 alumni singing along with the choir this year. I was in 02-05, and both my siblings were in it at one point as well as my mom and aunt. They're both gone now, so I'm here for them.

You think the same guy whose party has been gleefully talking about slashing Social Security and Medicare by billions of dollars is going to do fuck all about raising wages?

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

The problem is that scientific writing requires complex language to explain complex topics, but most newspapers are published at a 4th grade reading level. That's because 57% of US adults read below a 6th grade level, and 41% can't read above a 4th grade level and are functionally illiterate

Hot take: The real reason Super Soakers don't exist now is because cop robots aren't saltwater proof and the Super Soaker CPS 2000 Mk 1 with its 3.1L capacity and 25x pressure nozzle would make short work of one from up to 50 feet away

Give me a single image from a film that immediately makes you hear the song from the soundtrack playing in your head

My favorite part is how the NYPD is trying to frame the guy to the public as a crazed killer like Berkowitz in order to scare folks, when it's clear as day this was a targeted assassination.

Also, particularly for Medicare beneficiaries, if you suspect Medicare Fraud reach out to your state's Senior Medicare Patrol! It's a Federally funded program with licensed councilors whose job it is to investigate and report Medicare Fraud, Waste, and Abuse!

Wait, so now you want sympathy for kids born to parents that buy them a new Lexus at every major holiday? Sorry not sorry, not going to feel sad for the rich kids with rich parents
