We had a great time at Villa Vigoni discussing geoeconomics with a brilliant group of scholars. Many thanks to @dfg.de and everyone who contributed!
Very grateful for two days of collective thinking on the EU’s geoeconomic challenges
Huge thanks to my fab co-organizers @ankehassel.bsky.social @katemcnamara.bsky.social @donatodc.bsky.social @trgn.bsky.social + to the brilliant scholars who shared their insights about the challenges ahead
Infrastructure is power and DOGE is out to centralize control and then weaponize the plumbing. See a longer explanation of the risks here: www.lawfaremedia.org/article/elon...

We should strengthen our partnerships with the US and with scholars in difficult places, uphold our standards and realize how fragile our institutions really are.
I do not want to encourage anyone to leave their country to find refuge in Europe for our own gain, even though it is tempting. We need to find ways to maintain academic freedom and freedom of expression wherever we are.
We should be in full solidarity with our colleagues in US universities in these days. It must be incredibly hard to navigate the pressure and protect these institutions that still produce the best research, faculty and students in the world. www.ft.com/content/d95c...

It seems that Europe needs to have a response to authoritarianism in US higher education beyond poaching their professors. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

spot on!
I wrote a new piece for foreign policy.
The US's postwar role as guarantor of Europe’s security is over – and may even turn adversarial. But Europe has an overlooked trump card.
When it comes to manufacturing Europe blows the US out of the water.

A report commissioned by the German defense ministry says Beijing could purposefully delay wind projects, harvest sensitive data and remotely shut down turbines if given access to wind farms.

In Berlin, the Linke has the highest vote share and the SPD came fifth. SPD did not win a single district.
I celebrate the 80% of Germans who did not vote for the far right. Do not make 19.6% of German voters into "the" German people (again).
"The" German people don't exist! The German population is diverse and divided, but voted overwhelmingly for liberal democratic parties.

German public TV just published this poll of first-time voters. A massive lead for socialist Left party on 27%.
Left + SPD + Greens on 54% among first-time-voters. Those voters were also slightly less likely to vote AfD than national average.
So much for the “far-right youth”.
1. Background to the epochal change in German and European politics after the election. Merz, the presumed next Chancellor has said that Europe is setting out to "achieve its independence from the US, step by step." @abenewman.bsky.social and I explain the background in our book, Underground Empire
