We should strengthen our partnerships with the US and with scholars in difficult places, uphold our standards and realize how fragile our institutions really are.

I do not want to encourage anyone to leave their country to find refuge in Europe for our own gain, even though it is tempting. We need to find ways to maintain academic freedom and freedom of expression wherever we are.

Professors sue Trump administration over Columbia University overhaul Legal challenge reflects concerns over pressure on US academic freedom and freedom of speech

We should be in full solidarity with our colleagues in US universities in these days. It must be incredibly hard to navigate the pressure and protect these institutions that still produce the best research, faculty and students in the world. www.ft.com/content/d95c...

Trump is setting the US on a path to educational authoritarianism While we watch students getting handcuffed, vague new guidelines create a culture of fear over teaching our history

It seems that Europe needs to have a response to authoritarianism in US higher education beyond poaching their professors. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Heavy Industry Is Europe’s Trump Card The continent has an upper hand in its looming security competition with the United States.

I wrote a new piece for foreign policy.

The US's postwar role as guarantor of Europe’s security is over – and may even turn adversarial. But Europe has an overlooked trump card.

When it comes to manufacturing Europe blows the US out of the water.

Thread.

China could blackmail Germany via wind turbines, report warns A government-backed analysis seen by POLITICO argues Beijing could remotely shut down wind farms unless Germany bans its suppliers.

A report commissioned by the German defense ministry says Beijing could purposefully delay wind projects, harvest sensitive data and remotely shut down turbines if given access to wind farms.

In Berlin, the Linke has the highest vote share and the SPD came fifth. SPD did not win a single district.

I celebrate the 80% of Germans who did not vote for the far right. Do not make 19.6% of German voters into "the" German people (again).

"The" German people don't exist! The German population is diverse and divided, but voted overwhelmingly for liberal democratic parties.

German public TV just published this poll of first-time voters. A massive lead for socialist Left party on 27%.

Left + SPD + Greens on 54% among first-time-voters. Those voters were also slightly less likely to vote AfD than national average.

So much for the “far-right youth”.
