Small update: I learned a couple of weeks ago that my book will be out in paperback instead of hardcover, which hopefully makes it a bit more accessible for folks who are interested but daunted by the high prices of hardcovers (I get it). Preorder links below!

How much revenue did your fire service make last year? The military? How much money did your legislature make last year?

Why is the postal service the only governmental agency that's expected to be profitable? In the US or Canada?

The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

Yeah, I have heard similar things. I do find it's much more prevalent now (at least since covid lockdowns) than it was maybe 10 or so years ago. Maybe because fewer people are used to going to the cinema for those communal experiences? I don't know.

Saw The Wicker Man on the big screen tonight at The Playhouse. Fantastic, though I'm always baffled when I go see a movie like this and there are people in the audience who are laughing out loud. If it was the Nicolas Cage remake, maybe.

Richard Kadrey, Jasper Fforde, Mona Awad, Hailey Piper, Jeff Vandermeer...there are probably others but I own most of these authors' works, and immediately preorder. Vajra Chandrasekera is getting there for me, I've only read a handful of short stories and the two novels, but I love his work.

Honestly, good for him. I do not care if I ever read another word of the Game of Thrones books, let him live his life.

It takes a lot to astonish me, but: *FIVE YEARS* AFTER IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED, RED X HAS RECEIVED A STARRED REVIEW FROM PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. I did not think this was even possible. Thank you to everyone and most of all to me because I did the fucking thing.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened! On the next page, there was a query and I was like, oh you're wrong about this. You're not all-knowing! Then I breezed through it.

My first copyedit from the writing POV I opened the document, read the first query where they asked me to clarify a terrible sentence, and closed my laptop. Didn't get back to it for two days. This is after having been a copyeditor for over a decade and currently being an editor.

The Vampire Contemplates Skin Care - Small Wonders Bloodsucking is drying work / the leftover saliva slimed / around my lips

Today's poem by Lynne Sargent looks unflinchingly at being a vampire. Read "The Vampire Contemplates Skin Care" and then put some lotion on, for goodness sake.
