I keep trying to parse this sentence…is there a noun missing somewhere?

Especially when the “news” is that a team won the big game. We knew one of them was going to win, so that’s not news. Now, if a THIRD team that wasn’t originally playing (or that plays a different sport) ended up winning the game, that would be breaking news.
