"Are you fucking going to play as Rugal again?" asked a voice when I reached the Neo Geo MVS machine. "I absolutely, 100 percent, am not going to play as Rugal again," I promised, punching the buttons to select Rugal, which I had memorized.
Get him out.

Some of the most commonly enforced Jim Crows laws historically were anti-fishing and hunting regulations. At the time it was openly discussed that if black people had access to their own food procurement they would refuse to work as hard for white business owners or worse potentially go 'off grid'.
I find it interesting that every quarter I wind up explaining to my students what a Sundown Town is in relation to Black ppl (it usually comes up when anyone asks me about my dog, Willow) and when I mention the ppl who raised her + the place she was raised (Cullman, AL) their eyes always bug out.
There’ve been 100s of instances like this all over the US & it’s important to know that to contextualize what’s happening now.
It’s valuable to ask why, in the aftermath of Jan 6 & as democracy & privacy are having sledgehammers taken to them, why & when mob violence has been deployed & by whom.
I like to remind my students that Jackie Robinson RE-broke the color barrier because >50 yrs previously there were Black players in the Majors, but the teams actively chose to segregate.
Segregation & acts of racism are affirmative choices made by & for the benefit of White people & institutions.
Real.
I recently ate lunch with the internet’s favorite unc Mr. Tendernism, who told me you’re never too old to pursue your dreams

When they bring Pokémon Champions to mobile, I am in so much trouble.
If you don’t know about this, you need to read up. It’s the single bloodiest massacre in the history of Reconstruction, and it was perpetrated to overthrow the results of an election. It was emblematic of the sabotage of Reconstruction. And SCOTUS nullified the prosecution of those responsible.
The conversation is difficult yet very easy
America loves everything ABOUT Black people
EXCEPT the people
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

something that wrinkles my brain every time I remember it is the fact that total eclipses are only possible on earth because the moon and sun appear to be the same size in our sky, due to the insanely, astronomically unlikely fluke that the moon is 400x smaller than the sun but 400x closer to us.
This infuriating attitude shows up on the bookshelves in learning environments, too. We expect girls to empathize with boys, but we kneecap every opportunity to let boys empathize with girls. And look where we are.
"Checking in on the whole FGC writing thing"
It's been two months since the layoff and I've been writing almost every day. This one is mostly about returning to the craft of writing, and looking at the economics of writing in a video-driven world.

It's been two months since the layoff and I have been writing up a storm! But social channels are unreliable, and I don't do algorithm bait, so please make sure you can keep up on my work by signing up as a Patreon member (free tier is fine) and you'll get it in your email.

The Moon, backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse, is photographed by NASA\u2019s Orion spacecraft. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon\u2019s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. Credit: NASA
