Christmas Eve, OTC Omar Sakr The outpatient clinic festooned with colour. The bowl of candy canes. The velvet green dusted with frost. The silent brass bell (you know the one that we all long and dread to hear rung). Donna at the front desk, rough and warm as oak. A song from K-Pop Demon Hunters blaring. His blood counts are low. Everyone is smiling. I'm sorry your holy day is not my holy day. Into the treatment room. Blue, red pleather. Yellow dolphin. Gonna be, gonna be golden. I'm connected, he shouts. Platelets today, drip dripping into him, ugly bag of piss, immeasurable gift from a distant avatar. A large model bipedal plane hangs above, propellers facing us. A nod to the boys or war, industry, or how far we've come, I'm not sure. Ignore it bearing down on us in eternal stillness. Cause we are hunters. Whenever I look up I swear the plane is closer, or larger, or both. I can hear the roar and whir over the beeps and cries of strange children. This is our moment. Suspended, I wait for the landing. I beg.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. I spent yesterday in hospital as Nayirr needed two more transfusions. I wrote this poem while he lost himself in his iPad. I'm thinking of everyone going through it this holiday season, feeling suspended or unable to process joy xo
