GREAT book.

My parish used Waves of Gratitude last June. It is indeed lovely and effective.
Allelooooooooooya-aa-aa-aa. 🐇
And finally, although I totally get why, it frequently bums me out that so much of it is archived away in the relatively inaccessible accompaniment edition.
I like that many of the harmonizations, and some reused from 1940, are relatively novel, such as O come, O come, Emmanuel, but I also find myself reaching for the UMC hymnal for the traditional harmonizations I nostalgically crave.
Love the breadth of coverage. Love that it contains Gregorian chant AND Just As I Am. Love the service music.
Love and hate! 😂
I think you should do it—as long as this isn’t really dissertation procrastination. ;^) I’m giving a conference paper this weekend and am over 20% worried that cyberwar will keep me out of Google Drive at the moment of truth
This is wonderful. Reminds me of my first Easter as a newly churchgoing, converting Christian—I was in this packed nave, and we were reciting the Nicene Creed, and I noticed for the first time that I really, astonishingly *did* believe. It felt great. forwardmovement.org/2026/04/forw... ⚓️
I love the phrase “prayer marines.” Did you just coin that?
Love it. This was my childhood zoo.
The more improv, the more strongly I say yes. Count Basie, absolutely. Glenn Miller, ehh.
I’m tearing up. Just gorgeous
Don’t remember the last time I found gospel procession music this moving. 🕯️
This live feed is making me realize how poorly I understand how historical cathedrals are laid out.
Especially proud to see St Michael and All Angels there, representing the Diocese of Dallas!
Apparently this was commissioned by a Catholic parish in my town! I’ve seen this several times before but never realized this before today.
ALL of the hymns are good! I’m kind of relieved
I am nothing but excited about this!!!
My wife gifted me this a couple years ago because I’m a church nerd who loves cooking, and it’s just been sitting on the shelf
Right? (And now that you mention it, I’m due a reread)
I could go wild, too, I guess, and suggest the psalms and lessons from Matins for Thursday through Saturday (Lamentations is so good), but really, your post already knocked it out of the park, particularly the penitential psalms and hymns--perfect recommendations.
Another vote for the meditation from St Augustine's Prayer Book! For an additional BCP-adjacent-ish suggestion, I would add the Tenebrae service from BOS, which consists mostly of the psalms and responsories from Matins for Maundy Thursday. I think it's perfect for this.
Not that anyone asked, but this is a pretty awesome rendition of "Herr, unser Herrscher," which is pretty awesome to begin with. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyeO...
Short on time, I may just chant this in Latin with next week's Magnificat during evening prayer.
Lauds antiphon on "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die," John 11:25-26, in mode 2, from Liber Usualis p. 1804.
The best existing antiphon for the RCL Lent 5A Gospel (the Raising of Lazarus) is "I am the resurrection (Ego sum resurrectio)," a Liber Usualis chant appointed to the burial service and at Lauds in the Office for the Dead, sung with the Song of Zechariah. Not seeing an English version yet. 🕯️

A powerful new piece by Kevin Salfen, inspired by and filmed within St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, San Antonio. Give it a listen this morning! 🕯️ youtu.be/cOCjYj21njM
