an image of a man rowing a small boat to larger ship. the colours are otherworldly: the green of the water is highlighted by the yellow of the sun and white of rising waves. in the far background of the image a man's silhouette can be seen, outlined by a plume of rising smoke from a fire

an image of a crowd moving through a busy market. the market is bright, and colourful; hung above the crowds are vertical signs presumably advertising businesses.

Time to address disability inclusion for university staff There is significant work to do to promote inclusion for disabled staff in higher education. Susan Wilbraham, Carol Evans, and Jackie Carter see sharing practice and gathering data as the next step.

And we celebrate
with death and life

Steadfastness against
what the world refuses

And genocide it is.

This is harrowing, but it needs to be heard. No matter what the rights and wrongs are of what is driving events in Gaza, what my good friend and colleague @khawlabadwan.bsky.social describes in her poems is the reality of the outcome. #KeepTellingOfGaza

Many, many interesting talks at the DEFRA #LowlandPeatForum, exploring what policy, practice and partnerships are needed for the coming decades, especially since the new government has come to power

Hi Tom, yes we are, but one of our team has been taking photos there recently to check on remediation (all good) whenever he visits his parents who are also just around the corner!

A wonderful but cold day collecting GHG flux measurements at Bolton Fell Moss, a restored peatland on the England-Scotland border. Building a fab dataset of gas flux through seasons and under different weather conditions

This is a great way to visualise the impact of there being a bit more energy in our climate system, and why there is no longer a normal weather envelope as a consequence of climate change

They are not the solution, but if robust, validated carbon markets can bring levels of private investment into climate mitigation, I think we have to use them. Public funds (certainly in UK) are not enough….

INSIDER: Further Explanation on the Potential Contribution of Soil Carbon Sequestration on Working Agricultural Lands to Climate Change Mitigation Our previous blog, Regenerative Agriculture: Good for Soil Health, but Limited Potential to Mitigate Climate Change, generated a spirited discussion. Here we provide further elaboration on our conclus...

If we're going to start hearing claims that soil carbon sequestration on working agricultural lands can offset all of agriculture's GHG emissions (no way) or bring CO₂ down to pre-industrial levels (nooooooo way), I'm leaving this explainer here to show why that's impossible. Long but worth reading.

Punchy end to the season when it got going, yes? Using Emanuel's Hurricane Maximum Potential Intensity calculations you can see that in the Caribbean, this October's numbers - using the monthly average values for all inputs to the calculation - are the highest in the ERA5 dataset going back to 1940:

Bare peat surface at Rusland Moss, Cumbria. Areas of bare peat release large amounts of CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere, so restoration of these is imperative in meeting ambitious climate mitigation targets.

Excellent site visit today to Rusland Moss NNR, where UoC PhD researcher Fabio Messori will undertake experimental trials of wool to enhance peatland restoration, in partnership with Natural England, Environment Agency, Cumbria WT and W&F Council.

As an academic, Twitter was a great way to share and read about new developments. What it turned into was something far darker. Mastodon is good, but my gut feeling is that BlueSky is going to be the new platform of choice.
