They are not the solution, but if robust, validated carbon markets can bring levels of private investment into climate mitigation, I think we have to use them. Public funds (certainly in UK) are not enough….

If we're going to start hearing claims that soil carbon sequestration on working agricultural lands can offset all of agriculture's GHG emissions (no way) or bring CO₂ down to pre-industrial levels (nooooooo way), I'm leaving this explainer here to show why that's impossible. Long but worth reading.

Bare peat surface at Rusland Moss, Cumbria. Areas of bare peat release large amounts of CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere, so restoration of these is imperative in meeting ambitious climate mitigation targets.

Excellent site visit today to Rusland Moss NNR, where UoC PhD researcher Fabio Messori will undertake experimental trials of wool to enhance peatland restoration, in partnership with Natural England, Environment Agency, Cumbria WT and W&F Council.
