The Manitoba legislature has passed Bill 43, adding gender expression to the provincial human rights code.
In this doom and gloom climate, it's important to mark victories like this, to remember that despite the rise of the far right, we can still organize and win for π³οΈβπ people.

I wonder if Donald's use of the word "nasty" when women, and now Canadians, upset him, could shift how nasty is used? I've seen Canadians claiming it with pride, and well... In the 14th c. "Nice" meant foolish, so words do change. Is this thought because I now feel amused by the word nasty? Maybe.
I like @underthedesknews.bsky.social and @rachelgilmore.bsky.social for journalism/news, covering the USA and Canada respectively, but a lot of the info I get is from folks reposting things to their stories.
When I see news on IG, it's usually from accounts I've followed, or topics I've specifically shown interest in. I'll search topics to "train" my algorithm sometimes, but I try to not rely on IG for news, rather I use it as a prompt for issues to look into and/or consider different interpretations.
Her instagram is the most active way to see what sheβs up to, which can be found through her linktree. linktr.ee/dopaminedreams
In-person/local delivery:
Trinkets (pins, stickers, etc.) can be found at Dopamine Dreams, an absolute gem of a shop at UofC's MacEwan Hall. I quite like the styles of enamel pronoun and pride pins the owner sells, and the fandom related pins and stickers. She also supports students reliably.
They have two sites, teatrader.com (local shop) and mrmaxeystea.com (online store), with $12 shipping across Alberta, $15 across Canada.
Beyond #yyc:
My family has gone to Tea Trader for 15+ years. Their teas are quality, delicious, and reasonably priced, and the shop is locally owned. If in Calgary and able, I suggest going in person for the full experience, but if youβre not, their teas are worth ordering and trying anyways.
Here's the CRTC page about the consultation, if you case you're curious: crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/...

This is all just theorizing, of course, however to my mind it helps fill out the story we're seeing unfolding.
In any case, it's good to know about, since it will shape the future of Canadian media. Will streaming services have to invest in Canadian content in order to be allowed in Canada? 4/5
Those people are his investors, or stockholders, I'm not sure the right term, but they wanted something from him. And they don't want to be obligated to support Canadian content, carry Canadian channels. Maybe this is another bargaining piece with the tariff war that isn't common knowledge. 3/5
This is likely to go forward, which those companies *really* don't want to happen, unless some higher up applies pressure, like say... through tariffs. The people who own these companies were the ones at Donald's inauguration, and we know he's approaching this like a business. 2/5
I think more people should know about this: The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is currently having a consultation on if international online services (i.e. Amazon, Netflix) need to follow Canadian law reguarding investing in and promoting Canadian content. 1/5
Well, I want to start sharing thoughts here, and I'm horribly overthinking what to say. Do I start with an introduction post? What goes into that? What format? What words does one use to make sure the right folks find them?
So we'll go for this for now. If anyone has advice, please share π
One of my profs is part of the group behind this! He was telling us about it in class, thanks for helping me find it!
I'm too young to remember, so this is a comfort to hear. Nice to know this isn't entirely a new situation.
Stumbled onto this performance at the Calgary Central Library today, and stopped in to watch for a moment before trying my last #yychotchocolatefest entry for the year. Absolutely grateful to have passed by at the right time to see it.
(If anyone knows who this group was, please let me know!)
