The Trump regime doesn’t like the Southern Poverty Law Center labeling hate groups as hate groups, so it’s weaponizing the Justice Department to try to destroy the SPLC. This is DOJ taking the side of the Klan.
This DOJ indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center is textbook bad faith. Just trying to weaponize the Justice Department to help right wing extremist groups like the KKK and Neo Nazis.
The Justice Dept’s theory of the case— that the group that single-handedly disassembled the Ku Klux Klan defrauded its donors by concealing that it was using paid informant to do that work and more— has about as much merit as the now-dismissed charges against Jim Comey.
The primary charge, mail fraud, is specious. The theory is that donors to SPLC were defrauded because they were not told that their contributions were being used to pay extremists. But of course the extremists were being paid to help undermine extremist groups. Complete BS.
I’ve seen a lot of shocking things in the last ten years, but as someone who has admired the work of the SPLC in documenting and calling out hate groups for decades, this is truly up there.
