Graph showing the growth of mass incarceration and mass supervision in the U.S.
🚨NEW REPORT: Most people think of probation and parole as pathways away from the carceral system — but that couldn't be further from the truth.
New data reveal how community supervision has grown in parallel with mass incarceration and widened the net of social control 🧵

“The Warehouse,” a collaboration between artist Vic Liu & abolitionist organizer Mariame Kaba, asks visitors of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Bedford branch to imagine a world without prisons, @alexmar.bsky.social reports.
I am not sure why Melania Trump decided to make a statement about Jeffrey Epstein seemingly out of nowhere today, but if the idea was to put the ongoing coverup in the rearview mirror it will backfire spectacularly
was that Melania speech one of Iran’s demands

i went into this expecting the medical grievance denial rate in federal prisons to be in like the 70–80% range
after crunching the numbers, i found that 98% of the 66,000 medical grievances lodged between 2014–2024 were rejected by BOP; less than 1,000 cases were granted relief in 10 years
For months, families lived in fear, children were separated from parents, and two of our neighbors were killed by federal agents.
I’m establishing a council to document the impact of Metro Surge and create a public record of the harm Minnesotans endured. We will not forget.
In our latest, Mariame Kaba @prisonculture.bsky.social & Andrea Ritchie @dreanyc123.bsky.social on how to understand the spectacular violence of Trump’s ICE surges as an extension of the violence of everyday policing, and why to abolish ICE we must abolish the police

This administration is addicted to killing, preferably in the cruelest and most brutal ways possible. It’s their entertainment; their erotica.
I need to address this immediately, because I am WAY too Minnesotan to ever claim credit for this.
I built a thing to point the fire hose of people's generosity in the right direction. That's it.
I am thankful for the piece, because hopefully it means people will donate more money.
After months of relentless rapid response in Minneapolis, members of Defend the 612 had a moment to breathe and reflect on the lessons they’ve learned, the grief they carry, and the citywide fellowship they hope will endure. The crisis is not over, and I’m grateful they made time to speak with me.
After We Let Animals Live, a new book and documentary by Barbara Kyle and Stephen Best, explores what would happen if humanity stopped killing animals. 👀

I understand skepticism about their intentions, but rings true that Trump admin had a real bad time here and want to avoid repeating it elsewhere.
"DHS has no immediate plans for sweeping city-specific immigration enforcement operations, officials say"
NEW: Indigenous activists erected multiple tipis at Coldwater Spring outside Fort Snelling and near the Whipple Federal Building -- headquarters of ICE's Operation Metro Surge -- establishing an occupation demanding 'land back' in the form of “returning Fort Snelling” to the Dakota people. [Video]
Big shout out to @crimethinc.com — Great article (now also a zine) about rapid response lessons from Minneapoli. (One of the many resources linked in our ICE Watch Digital Security guide: activistchecklist.org/ice/ )
1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.
Hundreds of kids are still detained.
We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
Trump DHS claims 1360 deportable individuals subject to ICE detainers in MN prisons and jails. Real number is closer to 300. This bogus inflated number is why they say they're here. They can go home now.
Members of the American Indian Movement and the Many Shields Warrior Society are patrolling the streets of Minneapolis.
The Board of Governors decided, unilaterally, that no published textbook in the field of sociology could be used in compliance with the law for an Intro to Sociology class. None. Victor: There's not a single existing textbook on the market that could be used that would qualify under state law? Zachary: Correct. Victor: I'm sorry, that's kind of funny. Like, the absurdity of not a single sociology textbook getting past the censors. I mean, it makes me kind of proud of our colleagues, but...
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.
Great work everyone.

This Homan presser is completely incoherent. He started by announcing a drawdown of 700 agents (good!) but then pivoted to whining about "rhetoric" (bad) and suggested there will be more bloodshed if it doesn't stop (grim). Not clear to me that anything is actually changing on the ground here in MN.
