Mozilla Used Anthropic’s Mythos to Find and Fix 151 Bugs in Firefox The Firefox team doesn’t think emerging AI capabilities will upend cybersecurity long term, but they warn that software developers are likely in for a rocky transition.

NEW: Mozilla has already used Mythos to find hundreds of bugs, which is good and interesting in its own right and also points up that contra some catastrophizing coverage, it isn’t only attackers who will have access to these capabilities. @lhn.bsky.social has the news:

This is good stuff, though nowhere near as good as the crude illustration of a red-eyed Mr. Met smoking a joint the Post ran when a Mets reliever smoked weed so dirty he collapsed and had a seizure near Shea Stadium.

Five Trump Scandals You’ve Probably Missed Swirling scandals—from the Pentagon to DHS to the IRS to the Labor Department—that represent basic betrayals of public office, trust, and confidence-in-leadership that should be the table stakes of go...

Washington can only pay attention to a scandal or two at a time, which means in the Trump age there are all sorts of should-be-big-deal scandals that don’t get the oxygen or media focus that they should.

I'll bet you've missed at least three of these: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/five-trump...

My worry is just that you don’t pay a guy $100 million (or whatever) to not have him Act with his face. He is the ideal man for the job of Acting with the small bits of scarred flesh you can see in the eyeholes of the fearsome iron mask of Doom, though.

I would personally prefer to portray myself as a sinister philosopher-mystic at the bleeding edge of reality than as someone in the SaaS space with a focus on legacy systems and a growing line in government sales, so I do get it.

What Does Palantir Actually Do? Palantir is often called a data broker, a data miner, or a giant database of personal information. In reality, it’s none of these—but even former employees struggle to explain it.

Palantir doing supervillain monologuing sure does, deliberately or not, distract from its actual business being almost extravagantly boring:

A Prominent PR Firm Is Running a Fake News Site That’s Plagiarizing Original Journalism at Incredible Scale A PR firm is running a strange AI-fueled plagiarism mill that's ripping off — and mangling — a huge amount of local and national reporting.

NEW: A PR company is operating a bizarre fake news site that's plagiarizing original journalism at a massive scale -- all while spewing misinformation, publishing hallucinated quotes, and replacing real people’s names with “Jane Doe.”

Also: it misquotes the Pope.

The Shocking Secrets of Madison Square Garden's Surveillance Machine Famously vengeful Knicks owner Jim Dolan has long spied on people at his iconic arenas. WIRED goes deep inside the operation that allegedly tracked a trans woman, lawyers, protesters, and more.

Anything I say about this @noahshachtman.bsky.social and @robertsilverman.bsky.social story might get me put in a dossier, so I will say nothing and just strongly suggest you read it:

A lot of people don’t know this, but doctrinally, all you have to do is allude to the existence of just war theory to a) make the war in question just and b) checkmate the Vicar of Christ.

I wrote about Dianna Russini, the constant pressure female reporters face to prove they aren't sleeping with sources (plus the pressure we do get from sources to get involved with them), and why all of this is so uncomfortable to talk about.

The US Government to Ask Data Centers How Much Power They Use In a letter obtained by WIRED, the Energy Information Administration tells two senators that it plans to develop a mandatory assessment of data centers' energy use.

GOOD IDEA: The Energy Information Administration is making plans for a mandatory survey of data centers covering their actual energy use, on which we have surprisingly solid little information. @mollytaft.com with the news:

Barrera said her husband said the smell of human feces in the toilet caused a fellow detainee to vomit and, in turn, created a chain of people vomiting.
She said her husband is asthmatic and has not received medication to treat his condition. The lack of medicine and the stress of the overcrowded holding cell has left him short of breath and teetering on the edge of an asthma attack, Barrera said.
ICE did not immediately respond to questions on April 10 about the conditions of the Mesa or Phoenix facilities.
After the publication of this article, Barrera told The Arizona Republic her husband was transferred to the ICE facility at San Luis Regional Detention Center at about midnight. The San Luis Regional Detention Center is in Southwestern Arizona and has the capacity to hold 700 people.

This is horrific. A U.S. citizen describes the facility in Arizona that her husband was brought to while he waited to be put on a deportation flight. Dozens of people were crammed into tiny cells, there was a "chain of people vomiting" from filthy toilets, no medical care, and only one meal per day.

The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Much Worse Than You Thought An analysis by WIRED and Indicator found nearly 90 schools and 600 students around the world impacted by AI-generated deepfake nude images—and the problem shows no signs of going away.

NEW: Deepfake abuse incidents have been documented at schools in 88 countries, according to research by @wired.com and @indicator.media. One conclusion experts draw is that this is like other types of sexual violence: “Increasingly, the intent is humiliation, denigration, and social control.”

“They always spend a lot of time carrying on like, ‘No one's forcing you to pray, these are voluntary,’” says one Department of Labor employee. “But it's happening in the middle of a government workplace.”

I’m going to disagree with the apparent consensus and say “Democrats shouldn’t have run a candidate in 2020 if they wanted to truly defeat Trump” is the kind of thermonuclear take sports fans have long enjoyed and that politics enthusiasts should also get to enjoy.
