Language shapes everything, from how we think to how we connect and innovate.
Linguists are essential to understanding communication, and to creating ethical, responsible AI. We need more linguists.

Thanks, Lisa! Hope you’re keeping warm too
We made it 30 hours at home without heat or power before we chose to evacuate (once we started seeing our breath indoors). It’s been 4 days now, and no idea when power will be restored at home. Nashville is suffering, y’all.
I love the neighborhood turkeys

New from me: I talked to CDC staffers about the new vaccines and autism page. They said things like:
“The best way I can put it is it feels like we’re on a hijacked airplane.”
“I think people are starting to see that we can’t fulfill our mission here.”
The logo for the social media platform Threads, in white on a solid black background. The logo looks like the "at" symbol with a schwa in the middle instead of a lowercase letter A.
I hereby name this symbol "the schwat".
I will be taking no questions.

As a chronically bad sleeper, I started reading right before bed to help lull me to sleep. Now I can't read articles at night without my eyelids getting heavy two pages in.
I just wrote "correctment" instead of "correction" in a class email, so that's how I'm doing on the second week of classes.

Fascism and trade wars are inherently more dangerous to those who are struggling the most.
Immigrants, people of colour, LGBTQ+, disabled & elderly people will be hit the hardest.
People say “we survived them once & we can survive them again!”
Many did NOT survive. We fight in their memory.

One thing I do not like about grading writing assignments is having to actively be an AI detector.

Toxicologist here! This will improve the health of zero Americans. Current synthetic food dyes are not causing health problems, and are often times used because they are actually safer than natural food dyes. Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.
If you, like me, had you NSF granted terminated, here’s what I learned from a hopeful meeting with my VP of research:
1. We have 30 days to act! Meet with your admin asap
2. APPEAL: Everyone can appeal! It must go through your institution, there’s a template, sent registered mail. My VP told me ⬇️
The Spark Society appreciates your support. Thank you all for your donations. In addition to donations, I encourage those who study animal or human cognition to become a member of the Spark Society. If you support diverse voices and building inclusive spaces in Cognitive Psy/Sci, you belong!
🎉 🚨 UPDATE: As suspected, the cruel Lamberth & Watson bill to kick undocumented kids out of schools across 🇺🇸 is DEAD FOR THE YEAR, after huge pushback.
Bravo, y’all 👏🏽 — finances is the excuse, but the truth is the support wasn’t there because of the backlash.
