Our Connecting Limbs project is exploring ways to to revive the River Sheaf by mimicking natural processes. Architecture Masters students at @sheffieldhallamuni have come up with designs to boost biodiversity in the river and along its banks.

💧 Watering - provide deep watering during dry spells to support root establishment. This is more important for larger trees.
🪚 Light pruning - gently remove dead, damaged or poorly placed shoots to encourage a strong tree structure.
🦗 Inspect for pests and disease - young trees are vulnerable to attack so check them often for early signs of stress or damage.
🌱 Weed control - clear grasses and weeds from the base of young trees (but don’t mow!) to reduce competition for water and nutrients. You can also top up with well-rotted mulch if available.
🌳 Check stakes, ties and guards - loosen or adjust tree ties to prevent the tree trunk becoming constricted as it grows. Check any tree guards are upright and snug into the ground.

As part of our Connecting Limbs project, young volunteers worked with Stoneface Creative to design 'econiches' for riverbanks, to help wildlife adapt to habitat and climate changes.
