Tonight we're having a @phillyrb.org meetup at @indyhall.org. All are welcome. https://www.meetup.com/phillyrb/events/314336149

A table displaying server plans with details on CPU, RAM, SSD, traffic, and pricing. Error message at the bottom.
I've started using @Hetzner_Online for my projects. I'm running into an issue where I cannot get a better instance in US East. I've tried 3 times over the past couple weeks and get the same error each time. Are they at capacity? Am I doing something else wrong?
Notification from Starbucks about discovering drink ideas with ChatGPT.
Exactly what I need from Starbucks
A hand holds an unopened microwave popcorn bag next to a microwave with clear display and preset options.
All microwave popcorn bags say don’t use the popcorn button and all microwaves have a popcorn button. What’s wrong with the popcorn button?
A Mac screen displaying a search for "don't turn off display on battery" with no search results shown.
The Apple AI feature I actually want is to search settings for things like "don't turn off display on battery".
We’ve gone too far
I used to leaving a failing test for the next day but now I leave an unapproved plan.
I vibe coded too hard yesterday and passed an entire image as a parameter to a background job. I should have caught this but shouldn't Claude have caught this too?
That was the other approach Claude mentioned but I didn’t go with it because it said it was more complicated lol. Ill check that out
Claude plan for "Transparent textarea + styled backdrop"
I love when Claude comes up with an interesting solution that I'm not familiar with. I wanted a textarea with automatic styling for some words. It recommended a "Transparent textarea + styled backdrop". This is probably well known but I had never heard of it.
The color is a bit off. @marcoroth.dev only wears black shirts.
Conductor.build "You're absolutely right" setting
I like a developer tool with a sense of humor.
I finally started using @conductor_build and I'm really enjoying it. This is what Cursor should have become. Maybe its not too late for them.
I seem to have done something to cause a podcast to think I'm Spanish-speaking. I downloaded a new podcast series with a years worth of episodes. It keeps playing a Wicked on Broadway ad in Spanish. The Wicked on Broadway part is spot on though.
Why doesn’t the iPhone alert me that one bud isn’t plugged in? This doesn’t happen a lot but it drives me crazy when it does.
I'm sure some people will think this is crazy but I love it.
This is one of the joys of Ruby. I've never had a need until now to assert that a time is in a 2 hour range. Time implements the arithmetic operators so it works as I was hoping it would.
If you're tired of manually adding events to your calendar, check out https://calendarvision.app/
I used Hotwire Native Bridge Components to allow users to add an event directly to their calendar through the native modal.
Check it out https://github.com/thoughtbot/test_budget
test_budget is a cool gem from @matheusrich.bsky.social. Fail the CI if a spec starts taking too long. I just added it to my local CI.
This is what I'm doing now and I hate it.
Is there an easy way to do mass assignment in Rails for an STI model? "type_specific_field" is only on one child model. Not others. I'm getting an error when saving the other types. Is there a way to do this without changing the params in permit based on the model?
In Hotwire projects, I'm too focused on doing the optimal thing. With Inertia, I have no idea whether its optimal so I'm not spending time worrying about that. Anybody else notice this?
Java is chilling on the beach drinking coffee. The web is surfing. OLAP has not a care in the world and is about to crash into the beach. The internet is fast??? I’m out of ideas for the yacht metaphor.
Database systems concepts
I love buying old comp sci books in the used book store. They don’t make covers like this anymore.
I mostly use Claude but I've been trying Codex recently. I'm confused by the sandbox concept. Most things work the same but it cant run Rails System tests. It also never asks me to approve code before it writes it. How can I get it to behave like Claude?
I’ll be speaking about Hotwire Native tomorrow at Chicago Ruby! Join in person or virtually via the Zoom link below.
