And one of the greatest joys of delivering training is when someone approaches me afterwards to say they are now having questions about their own neurotype for the first time. It is a privilege to be there when that lightbulb goes off!

Once I started learning from Autistics, my whole understanding opened up! And I keep learning more every day. It allowed me to truly recognise myself, accept, and appreciate my Autistic identity.

Learning from non-Autistic people meant I never had access to the kinds of insights you can only get from someone who is Autistic themselves.

I spent roughly 13 years learning about Autism from non Autistic people – when I was teaching all the info I was given was from a non Autistic, outside looking in perspective. I genuinely believe that’s why it took so long for me to realise I am Autistic.

And to continue seeking us out every time you want to learn more about our community, culture, intersectionality, or any Autistic related topic.

It’s the start of our Autistic Empowerment Campaign today,
There will be a lot of information about Autism floating about, and a lot of it will not be from people who are Autistic. So I strongly encourage everyone reading this to make an effort to seek out more Autistic voices…

For too long, autistic people have been unheard, unsupported, and excluded from decisions about our own lives.

SEMA, along with @amase.org.uk , @arghscotland.bsky.social @auroraconsulting.bsky.social & AVATAR have come together to set out a shared vision for change.

It’s a fab offering. And so reassuring to families who feel pressure to keep up with peers when they really don’t have to.

Not for a very long time, I’d forgotten it, but I love it. I need to dig through my Scots dictionaries again! (Yep, plural!)

Having flexibility built in to our buildings and systems makes it much easier to meet everyone’s needs.

Having a one size fits none approach misses out on so many of us, especially those who march to the best of our own drums!

There is huge irony in the mistaken belief that Autistic people are utterly inflexible when every day we advocate for our needs in an inflexible world!

Many reasonable adjustments cost very little to nothing and benefit far more than just Autistic folks.

Happy reading!

I am hoping it will help those of you who are at the start of your journeys, but also those of you who have been travelling this road for a good few years and looking for a place with a lot of knowledge into one area.

It has been an absolute labour of love putting it together – so much of the information contained is info I wish I’d had when I first found out that my child and I are Autistic.

And also, to my family who have been incredibly understanding as I hid myself away in my office writing and brought me many cups of tea. I am sorry for frequently forgetting to bring the empty cup back down.

Each page is an introduction to the topic with information drawing from my own lived experience as an Autistic person, an Autistic parent, my experiences supporting countless Autistic people both as a teacher and my years running an Autistic Disabled People’s charity, as well as up to date research.
