The primary charge, mail fraud, is specious. The theory is that donors to SPLC were defrauded because they were not told that their contributions were being used to pay extremists. But of course the extremists were being paid to help undermine extremist groups. Complete BS.

I’ve seen a lot of shocking things in the last ten years, but as someone who has admired the work of the SPLC in documenting and calling out hate groups for decades, this is truly up there.

the only logical reason for the Trump administration to bring this case is that doing so will necessarily reveal the identities of informants who have been spying on white supremacist hate groups and turning information over to the SPLC.
