Now, I like the *drive* from Crieff up to Amulree and over to Dunkeld, but I certainly don't fancy an early-morning bus trip around those roads.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 926: Avoid long descriptions of your characters. No one really cares what the shape of their nose is, or what their jumper is made of, especially when that’s the first thing your readers are learning about them…

I think if it’s going to be legal to wear pervert glasses that film people in public, they *should* be this obvious(ly hideous)

It's a good solution to many, many problems. I am up too early because I never got around to wrapping the birthday presents last night...🤫

Mine is that when the masks came off we saw revealed those few who have consideration and care for people with chronic illness, versus those who would be fine if they were all dumped on a faraway island and never heard from again. Once you've seen people's real priorities, you can never unsee it.

Looking like 2024’s record sea surface temperatures may soon be broken - and that’s *before* the El Niño predicted for later this year kicks in, further supercharging climate impacts.

It’s time for emergency action at a wartime scale both to prepare and to cut emissions.

AI job scams are booming – and I was fooled by one. Here is how to avoid them Fraudsters are using the promise of fake roles to trick job-seekers out of money, personal information or both, and with the help of AI they are more convincing than ever. But there are ways to spot t...

Actually mine was spotted from a blood test, CA 9-99 followed by an immediate operation. 1% survival chance in 2019 but thanks to all find raisers it’s now 13%. Keep going. We’re winning!

this is it right here. AI violates Vonnegut's number 1 rule for writers: "Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted." AI shifts the burden of effort from the writer onto the reader/audience and that is unacceptable

Don’t write your book with AI but we’ll edit it with AI! Don’t do your homework with AI but you’re required to learn how to use AI or you won’t get a good grade! Don’t use AI to make a resume but we will be using AI to feed resumes through! [pterodactyl screech] None of this has to be this way

Just staggering willingness to cede vast areas of practical, factual human knowledge-based expertise to machines whose core function is to MAKE THINGS UP THAT SOUND PLAUSIBLE.

Heading along to our fantastic Things Found In Books gig at the University Library on 29th May?
To get us all inspired, we looked through a box of material we've found in our Special Collections books!
And if you haven't got your (free) ticket yet, then what are you waiting for: stir.ac.uk/ahw

The evangelical belief that everything will somehow turn out for the best because the monorail salesman was saying optimistic things as we wrote him the cheque... 🤪

Was feeling a little overwhelmed with work today, juggling a few imminently pressing tasks, and then I checked in on a colleague in poor health who responded that they only had a few months to live.

What petty unimportant lives we've built around ourselves.

AI Survey 2026

OUP just sent me a nice little survey on AI use. I've told them what I think - I think you should too!
