JAMES MERRILL
CHRISTMAS TREE
From loes torn hamin Had been fed, looked after, kept still, Meant, I knew— of course I knew - That it would be only a matter of weeks,
That there was nothing more to do. Warmly they took me in, made much of me,
The point from the start was to keep my spirits up. I could assent to that. For honestly, It did help to be wound in jewels, to send Their colors flashing forth from vents in the deep
Fragrant sables that cloaked me head to foot. Over me then they wove a spell of shining —
Purple and silver chains, eavesdripping tinsel, Amulets, milagros: software of silver,
A heart, a little girl, a Model T Two staring eyes. Then angels, trumpets, BUD and BEA (The children's names) in clownlike capitals, Somewhere a music box whose tiny song
Played and replayed I ended before long By loving. And in shadow behind me, a primitive IV To keep the show going. Yes, yes, what lay ahead
Was clear: the stripping, the cold street, my chemicals
Plowed back into the Earth for lives to come — No doubt a blessing, a harvest, but one that doesn't bear,
Now or ever, dwelling upon. To have grown so thin.
Needles and bone. The little boy's hands meeting
About my spine. The mother's voice: Holding up wonderfully!
No dread. No bitterness. The end beginning. Today's
Dusk room aglow For the last time
With candlelight. Faces love-lit,
Gifts underfoot.
Still to be so poised, so
Receptive. Still to recall, to praise.

Really hope people are channeling their anger for the Dems into local action/organizing.

Posting online is cathartic, but I promise that joining an org and finding your political home is way more satisfying and powerful in the long run.

There are many lessons to draw from Zohran's campaign and this primary, but by far the most important one is that robust organization is what makes the impossible possible.

If you don't already have an organizational home, then may Z's win make the difference in finally motivating you to find one.

What Zohran Mamdani’s win in NYC means for us in Philly | Opinion Mamdani’s stunning mayoral primary win points to the future of left-wing politics — which is starting to take hold here in Philadelphia too, write Philly Democratic Socialists of America cochairs.

“There’s a new type of politics emerging in this country and it doesn’t involve sucking up to billionaires or emulating the politics of the right.”

“Why do you care about the NYC mayoral race we have our own stuff to worry about—“ THINK! THINK WITH YOUR BRAIN FOR FIVE SECONDS! CAMPAIGNS ARE CASE STUDIES! THEY ARE LESSONS! THEY ARE WARNINGS!

Surprisingly effective things Zohran Mamdani ran on:
-free buses
-rent freeze
-halal cart for $8 instead of $10
-taxing the 1%
-no cost childcare
-city-owned grocery stores
-a Department Of Community Safety for mental health programs and crisis response
-building affordable housing
-why Cuomo sucks

Maybe all of the oxytocin from Zohran winning is what finally sends me into labor

Look, just because we beat Cuomo tonight doesn't mean this is time to stop punching him in the junk.

If Zohran becomes mayor and stabilizes the rent, y’all can stop moving to Philly 🎉

Philly snark aside, this is amazing and @socialists.nyc deserve a fucking victory lap

what’s funny is that if pro-cuomo centrist democrats were less myopic they might see that mamdani was running the kind of campaign that could help rebuild the party brand — accessible with an outsider persona and a focus on “kitchen table” issues.

Today, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth in Skrmetti v. United States.

This is a direct attack on our trans siblings and sets a chilling precedent for future assaults on LGBTQ+ rights.

ICE wants to come to Philly. They’ll be met with the brotherly shove.

Very grateful I am pregnant after such a long battle with infertility, however if I have to be pregnant for much longer I will go insane.

The third trimester got hands.

Working people can beat back the authoritarians and oligarchs—but only with mass action.

This May Day, DSA is proud to join a broad, labor-led coalition fighting for workers everywhere.

Surrounded by sheriffs & local cops, President Trump signed an Executive Order Monday asking Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to determine how the military can be best used in local law enforcement operations to fight crime. Martial law?

Very proud to announce that Philly DSA now has a parental leave policy for chapter leadership! This was a labor of love for me, and I’m so happy that we’re one step closer to parenthood not being a barrier to organizing within our movement.

Hmm I wonder what the long term strategy is behind replacing birth certificates, over which the federal government has no control at all, with passports, over which the Executive Branch has nearly exclusive control, as a foundational document for citizenship and voting.

these are oligarchs so detached from the experiences of regular people that when they workshop lines like this, they think they've really nailed it
