the core of abolitionism to me is compassion. It is a model of justice that treats all offenders with compassion and imposes judgment on them in a way that isn’t cruel and prioritizes rehabilitation. it won’t work for all, and it won’t lead to a perfect world. but it has to work better than this.

if you find yourself choking on the obvious reality that the most vile and serious kinds of harm exist systemically and the carceral system is fundamentally broken, it’s natural. It’s a terrifying thing to realize. but retreating into the same punitive mentality just won’t work.

if you’re starting from the position that you will not under any circumstances show compassion to a person who has committed a serious crime or put any stock in rehabilitation then abolitionism isn’t going to sway you much. I don’t know what you expect
