I’m very happy to share my first paper on the effects of AWI interactions and flexibility on SPA data quality! Thank you to everyone on the team 🤩

You can pry my em dashes — one of my favorite punctuation marks and one I often use — from my cold, dead keyboard.
I started on this around 2006 so only taken 20 years! The project itself started over 30 years ago. Great to finally see the elusive structure.
📢 Just over 3 weeks left to apply for a 4-year funded PhD position at @astonaime.bsky.social for October 2025. Come study protein-lipid interactions in mechanosensitive channels with me, Dr. Alice Rothnie, and Prof. Corinne Spickett 📢
📅 Application deadline: 7th April 2025

Take a look at our new paper! We show that YbiO can achieve a conductance equivalent to MscL, the largest known gated ion channel. We also show the presence of several subconducting states. One state is consistent with a structure we determine using cryoEM.

Hi Folks!
I'm actively seeking a new position, either in the UK/Europe or outside of the government in the US.
Please share with whomever and pass the word along! 🙏

New job, new social media. I recently became a lecturer in Biosciences at Aston. I'm incredibly lucky to be associated with @astonaime.bsky.social and am looking forward to many new membrane protein adventures as I set up my lab for the first time.
Preprint is up! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Trevor Docter + Ben Sorum found cannabinoids inhibit mechanosensitive K+ channels, including TRAAK mutants that cause epilepsy and FHEIG in humans. #ephys and #cryoem shows CBD competes with lipids to bind inside the channel cavity and block the pore.
Please share, we have #PhD opportunities for anyone interested in filming the #Biophysics of life at the nanoscale.
