I’m just trying to work but this fellah insists on being a lap warmer.
Freelance scheduling in a nutshell: "We can't tell you exactly when we need you or if we need you at all, but keep your schedule open!"
2 and 3 are both Blaustein but 3 was taken from a French (?) novel or some such
This all happened in the span of a week…
Kids: “what’s a possum?”
Me: (describes one, looks up Japanese) huh, 袋狐/ふくろぎつね… pouch fox?
there seems to be some heat around a certain title that was "localized" recently, but one post mentions that multiple agencies are credited. I can confirm that producers often use different agencies for different parts of the loc process--from in-game UI and dialogue to marketing and ads.
Hold my sah-kee…
Walls!
Base planks (?) in! Walls go up end of month!
Very hearty!
Might try that with gochujang in place of half the miso later today!
my secret ingredient: white pepper. can substitute with black pepper too.
I guess the win-win is to hire an interim translator in the meantime and bring you back onboard again later
was at a nomikai when an older Japanese guy said to a girl "despite being vegetarian, よう大きくなりましたね" and it took a few iterations of clarifying he did NOT mean "big" but rather "healthy" and in retrospect I think even "normal" would've worked.
Now that’s a double shot!
this is an interesting look into naming titles, which is a totally different beast in the translation game. Even Disney titles between English and Japanese are wild. I once came up with "The World is Your Weapon" for 武器集め because you could literally use anything in the game world as a weapon.
probably unintentional ragebait but still.
why is it that your nose runs and your feet smell?
Over a decade being in game loc, I've come to a similar conclusion about Japanese dialogue. Several characters can have the exact same line, and I think j-audiences will hear/imagine it differently in their minds while western audiences need it to be different. high vs low context.
Going up, up, up…

One client: Be faithful to the Japanese. Do NOT change the meaning!
Another client: Transcreate, deviate, add/change whatever you like to spice it up!
Hello fellow linguists! I'm putting out this post to see if there are any JP to EN freelance translators who are interested on working on a relatively small Japanese game. Please leave a comment in this post or send me a message, and I can assist in getting you connected.
Client having me redo existing translation (from a different vendor) because the quality was poor. Thank you for the extra work! I’ll take it!
Worked on a project where the glossary term was “extremely rich person” and I suggested “tycoon” but I guess it was already too late. 🫠
Foundation is in!
Editing bad translation is bit of a chore, but editing for talented translators is a joy and learning experience.
Now whether 能力 refers to stats or an ability is based on which side of the bed the dev rolled out of
I get that the voice actor probably doesn’t actually speak Cantonese, but I could *not* understand a single word out of knuckleduster’s mouth in the latest ep of vigilante.
