đ§ľđEstablished by W. Garfield Weston in 1958 through an endowment of shares in the family business â now known as Associated British Foods plc â the Foundation is still guided by the Weston Family. They wear a black sleeveless top, gray trousers, and bright red shoes. The graphic includes the text âSophia Benrud (she/they)â with hashtags #WomenShapingSustainability and #WHM2026.
Text reading: Sophia Benrud (she/they) is a queer environmental justice organiser from the Global Majority whose work centres on community, equity, and collective care. Based in Minneapolis, she has been active in grassroots movements including Black Visions Collective. For Benrud, environmental justice goes beyond protecting natureâitâs about ensuring people can live safely and with dignity. Their work links climate and racial justice, highlighting how environmental harm disproportionately affects marginalised communities. She also challenges the lack of diversity in mainstream environmental spaces, creating initiatives that centre BIPOC leadership, including climate study groups and community food projects. Their work reminds us that climate change is a human issue, and that building a sustainable future requires rethinking power and centring those most affected.
For #WomensHistoryMonth & #WomenShapingASustainableFuture, weâre spotlighting Sophia Benrud (she/they) a queer environmental justice organiser in Minneapolis. Their work links climate & racial justice, centres Global Majority leadership, and builds community care for a more just, sustainable future!

A black and white photo of Rachel Carson (she/her), a white woman from the US with short wavy hair pulled back from her face, wearing a suit jacket. The border is Mosaicâs magenta colour and the image also features Mosaicâs brand graphic shapes in pink.
Text reading: Rachel Carson (1907â1964) was a marine biologist, writer, and public intellectual whose work reshaped how societies think about nature, science, and responsibility to future generations. Her 1962 book âSilent Springâ is frequently credited with igniting modern environmentalism. Although she never self-identified her sexuality in her lifetime, Carson never married and shared a deep, enduring emotional bond with Dorothy Freeman, with whom she exchanged hundreds of letters over more than a decade. Carsonâs legacy connects sustainability and human rights: protecting ecosystems, valuing scientific truth, and recognising the dignity of people whose lives donât fit societal norms. Her work reminds us that caring for the planet and expanding social inclusion are mutually reinforcing goalsâand that lasting change often begins with one clear, compassionate voice.
This #InternationalWomensDay weâre celebrating #WHM by highlighting LGBT+ women shaping a sustainable future đ First: Rachel Carson (she/her), whose 1962 book Silent Spring helped spark modern environmentalism and reminds us that caring for the planet and social inclusion go hand in hand!
