The biggest problems of adaptations is the risk of mischaracterization. The other is the director’s potential contempt for the source material. The worst adaptations are a combination of the two. Creatives also don’t typically like retelling someone else’s story so why not give them some liberties

Nexus Mods was down for weeks because of the influx of new players when Fallout started and Edgerunners saved 2077’s PR after its infamous launch. Both succeeded in bringing in new players and had even more for existing fans

I feel like the overall success of Fallout and Edgerunners shows that you can make something for fans of the games while having an original story and not being a direct adaptation.
