The EU will soon require smartphone manufacturers to let users replace their batteries.
The tough new rules - endorsed by the European Parliament this week - could save millions of phones from landfill.

“Another way to look at this is that billionaires have joined a war on professional administrative class of public servants precisely because of their proximity to formal mechanisms of accountability.”
That part! Everything from documentation to compliance mechanisms to whistleblowing is a threat.
Calm down, computer software isn't making decisions about who lives and who dies in war. It merely processes a ton of data and then makes a recommendation to a human who has no realistic way to verify it
Will the federal government finally pull Palantir from its list of pre-qualified suppliers of "responsible and effective AI services, solutions, and products"? (Screenshot from Canada's list of interested AI suppliers as of this morning). As @bildoperationen.bsky.social notes, this is not new.

Surprise inspirational drawings left by the early morning shift in my office. 🤗 Monday just got a bit more colourful!
> The controversy associated with the statement “Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer” reveals more about modern attitudes towards women [than her] achievements. [Her 1843 algorithm] was so advanced, that it was still utilised in record-breaking computation of Bernoulli numbers in 2008.
Any push to increase school attendance has to deal with the fact that schools are where sickness spreads - and it doesn't stay there. Forcing sick kids to go anyway will make that even worse.
If they're serious, start by cleaning the air. Attendance and learning will improve as kids get healthier.

Screenshot of email. ISED logo at the top. Text of email: "On behalf of the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, thank you for your email of March 30, 2026, sharing submissions received by the People’s Consultation on Artificial Intelligence. Minister Solomon appreciates receiving these submissions and is encouraged by your engagement on this important matter. Again, thank you for forwarding this input from Canadians to him, and please accept our best wishes on his behalf. Sincerely, Executive Correspondence Unit"
Received this morning. Minister Solomon can officially no longer pretend not to know about the open letter, its 160+ (now 275+) signatories, or the People's Consultation on AI, its submissions, & those who participated in it! 🎉 (nb I erased the greeting which was just my name) #PCAI

I am very proud and excited to share that a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology featuring We Robot 2025 conference papers is now published and fully open access, with thanks to funding support from @windsorlaw.bsky.social: digitalcommons.schulichlaw.dal.ca/cjlt/vol23/i...
WeRobot special issue is now available open access! Big ups to @kristenthomasen.bsky.social & @suziedunn.bsky.social for gettin' 'er done. My article deep dives into "interoperability" and what on earth it's doing in gov't so you don't have to 😉 digitalcommons.schulichlaw.dal.ca/cjlt/vol23/i...

The WSJ piece is a truly horrifying read, and I’m not sure I can recommend it; it needs a content warning klaxon. But if you have any doubts about how dangerous these things are, for adults *and* kids, or if you think their spongy ‘guardrails’ actually hold, it will clear that right up for you.
i'd die on the hill that @caelan.bsky.social is doing some of the best work on chatbots & AI harms surrounding young people these days. every video lately has been harrowing but really illuminating, and asks serious questions about what the fuck "safety" and "guardrails" AI companies purport to have
A screenshot of a Facebook post by CBS 2 Boise. The post text reads: "A new state law required the City of Boise to take down the Pride flag outside City Hall. Tuesday morning, the City wrapped flag poles in Pride colors and added a new sign to the window on City Hall. CBS2 reached out to the Mayor and Governor’s office for comment." Below the text is a collage of three photos showing these updates: Left: A tall metallic flagpole in a plaza at night, with its lower section wrapped in horizontal stripes matching the colors of the Progress Pride flag (black, brown, light blue, pink, white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). Top Right: A closer view of a flagpole base, also wrapped in horizontal Progress Pride flag colors. Bottom Right: A large window on City Hall featuring a graphic with diagonal stripes in the Progress Pride colors alongside the text, "Creating a city for everyone."
Oh, this is good. Idaho passed a bill banning local cities from flying the Pride flag. So the cities decided to wrap the poles themselves in pride colors.
This is amazing.

What a fabulous initiative. Artists as agents, infiltrators, translators, and advocates. All while they are in residence in New York City government institutions.
A couple weeks ago, Nicholas Keung at the Toronto Star reported on how generative AI is being used to assess immigration applications in Canada...and how it's led to refusals because of stuff the AI tool added in, that humans (clearly) failed to check.
