A critical view of EU Commission practice on access to documents, by Prof Päivi Leino-Sandberg

Professori Päivi Leino-Sandbergin johtamassa monitieteisessä (In)Security and Democracy -hankkeessa tutkitaan, miten demokraattiset yhteiskunnat voivat säilyä avoimina ja moniarvoisina tilanteessa, jossa pelon politiikka hallitsee julkista keskustelua yhä vahvemmin.
(In)Security and Democracy, a multidisciplinary research project led by Professor Päivi Leino-Sandberg, sets out to explore a fundamental question: How can democratic societies remain open, deliberative, and pluralist when the politics of fear increasingly dominate public discourse?
As a researcher, following the Ursula von der Leyen presidency demonstrates its attitude towards participatory democracy has been a journey from disbelief to frustration, and then to worry and anger, warns professor Päivi Leino-Sandberg.

Here's Päivi's Op-ed on the difficulties of building European democracy given the Commission's profound lack of appreciation of how democratic governance should work. 👇
Next week, EU judges will rule on the Pfizergate scandal: did the secret texts between von der Leyen and Pfizer’s CEO vanish, or were they never meant to be seen? We spoke to legal scholar Päivi Leino-Sandberg: for her, this case is about more than texts. It’s a battle for transparency.

Quote from our published article by author Päivi Leino-Sandberg: “The leaked drafts on the EU’s next MFF verify that the Commission’s plan mimics the features of the NGEU. This model is ill-suited to addressing geopolitical challenges facing the EU today.”
Leaked Commission documents on the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework are out!
PÄIVI LEINO-SANDBERG explains how they mirror the NGEU—and why that might be a problem:

Trump lopettaa nyt tutkimushankkeita tyrmäävää vauhtia, poliittisin perustein. Suomessa tutkijat huolestuivat hiljattain lakiehdotuksesta, joka tekisi tilaa samantapaiselle sensuurille. Martti Koskenniemi kirjoittaa aiheesta Yliopisto-lehden pääkirjoituksessa. www.helsinki.fi/fi/uutiset/y...
The financial accountability of the RRF suffers from basic design failures, says Päivi -S.

The deadline for the abstract submission is tomorrow- if you are working on various questions around older persons' rights, apply to present your work in the International conference on March, 20-21. We have received some wonderful applications and are looking forward to the insightful discussions.
When it comes to transparency, the second UvdL Commission seems to continue where her first Commission left off. On 4 December 2024 the new Commission updated its Rules of Procedure.

To catch up with the US and China, the EU needs massive investment.
Problem is, the funding scheme proposed by the #DraghiReport hardly finds a basis in the treaties.
