Needless deaths are depressing me today. And, I’m not sure a day goes by that I am not thinking, praying, and hoping for hostages to come home alive. This is so….

We don't talk enough about how much inventory has been snapped up by investors driving prices up and making it impossible for folks to move from renting to buying. Even in decent COL areas. :(

Oh, and I also thought, "Why not buy a couple of multifamily units in Detroit?" since we lost all our family homes in the city during the recession.

Family hesitated in fall 2020. By the time they said "OK!" in fall 2021, a hundred thousand others thought of the same damn thing. No availability.

Nope. Under the UN Refugee Convention and Geneva Convention, there is "no obligation for refugees to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach"

2 years ago 31 1 0 0

There is no law that requires refugees to do that, and for good reason: if that were the case some countries would end up with all the refugees, while others get none.

Also: people go where their family is and where they speak the language. Lots speak English.

ALSO Joanne isn't American. 🤣

Maps: Tracking the Attacks in Israel and Gaza At least a quarter of all buildings in northern Gaza are damaged or destroyed, a satellite analysis suggests.

BREAKING: Intensifying Israeli air strikes have destroyed solar panels that were installed atop several bakeries. At least 5 bakeries in the Gaza Strip have been directly targeted by strikes, and at least 8 more have suffered so much damage from attacks near them that they are now out of service.

Okay, sure, but we've been talking about the reality of this pipeline for abuse for YEARS— deepfaked nudes of people made against their will & used to harm their dignity & reputations— & there's STILL no industry-wide implementations against it?

And we're letting these people help craft policy???

I say this in all sincerity: If your goal is to maximize left support for the Dems in the November 2024 elections, the LAST THING YOU WANT TO BE DOING in November 2023 is to putting up snotty social media posts dunking on leftists who are saying they might sit the election out.

I see more vote-shaming among the folks who are disgusted with Democratic Party strategy but have convinced themselves to vote Democrat anyway than with party leaders, who don't seem to know that anyone is disgusted with them and their leadership.

2 years ago 2 1 0 0

The Democratic Party is like General Motors in the early 1980s, making mediocre cars and daring consumers to buy Japanese cars instead.

Vote-shaming is what you do when you have no strategy, and are down to the tactics of last resort.

We need better.

Rats have an imagination, too, researchers show with brain implants Rats think of objects and places that are not directly in front of them, a key requirement for remembering the past and imagining the future.

A new study shows humans are not the only ones with an imagination.

you know you've overdone it when even the UN Human Rights office starts suspecting that your very obvious war crimes might in fact be war crimes

From the report: "Debt levels have continued to increase for those earning certificates, those attending for-profit institutions, Black students, and to some extent, Asian students." This matters not just for #highered but for high schools helping students decide what's next. #EduSky #edpolisky

Would be exciting to create a new city. Make it car free. Safe. Put YIMBY in its DNA.

Place it close to the sea but up on a mountain.

American Ornithological Society Will Change the English Names of Bird Species Named After People - A... “There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today,” says president. “The time has come for us to transform...

I get that this is small potatoes given global events, but it's big news in the bird world & a bold, good decision: The Amer. Ornithological Soc. is committing to renaming all English birds that bear the names of people.

(I wrote about why this matters in May: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch... )
