Batteries are the "lightbulb of the 21st century": their costs are down 50% v. 18 months ago, and 95%+ v. 2010

It's a drastic drop of spectacular proportions, powering the clean energy transformation worldwide

EVs are one their way to take a huge bite out of global oil demand by 2030 – 5m to 8m barrels of oil per day, and rising fast. 5m barrels/ day is about the entire current oil consumption of Japan

This study is a nail in the coffin for all BECCS-advocates (looking at you, Denmark!): “Assuming that all four planetary boundaries are respected (…) the model study indicates a removal potential [from BECCS] of less than 200 million tonnes of CO2 in 2050.”

NEW: Global EV sales grew 18% year-on-year in Jan 2025

Was this due to the "devastating collapse" of 21% growth in Europe?

The "stalling" 12% growth in China?

Maybe the "plunging" 22% rise in US/Canada?

Or "faltering" 50% rest-of-world growth…?

Sig mig, har Berlingske ikke fanget, at brint er det primære input i produktionen af e-SAF? Og at talrige studier viser, at e-SAF med kendte teknologier er en økonomisk blindgyde? #dkgreen

Consider that if we stopped using crop-based biofuels for road transport and instead put them to work in planes, we could decarbonise 25% of aviation by tomorrow.

Figure ES.1. Life-cycle GHG emissions of average medium-size gasoline internal combustion engine (ICEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) registered in Europe, the United States, China, and India in 2021 and projected to be registered in 2030. The error bars indicate the difference between the development of the electricity mix according to stated policies (the higher values) and what is required to align with the Paris Agreement.

The graph below shows the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs. The embodied carbon from battery manufacture is yellow in the graph.

You can see that it’s dwarfed by the emission savings from driving EVs compared to ICE vehicles.

OK this one is CRAZY! Based on a simple extrapolation, the COLDEST month of the year by 2141 could be the same temperature as the WARMEST month of 1956, *GLOBALLY*!

Think about that. JANUARY a Century from now as warm as JULY seventy years ago😲

IF we the don't stop the warming

Don Jr. and Trump’s former Balkan envoy, Ric Grenell, seem to have decided to back Kosovo’s opposition ahead of Sunday’s elections. While it’s no surprise given Grenell’s fixation on PM Albin Kurti, it’s still cause for concern.

A 🧵 on the background of all this:

How quickly we decarbonize depends a lot on how we allocate risk. In an article out today by the Danish national broadcaster, I argued that government policy should de-risk renewables, and explained how this can benefit both developers and consumers.

I ran $100 billion in Infrastructure and IRA programs at EPA. We obligated over $70 billion onto signed awards and contracts to protect public health and the environment. All that funding is currently frozen. Here are the facts…

Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵

Also, two other things: 1) These temperature targets refer to long term averages, so one year over 1.5°C isn’t reaching that target. 2) 1.5°C is a policy target and not a geophysical target. Nothing magical happens at 1.5°C.
