"Whatever virtual prion disease we’re getting from consuming our culture’s words slurried up and returned to us, it seems that it is, at least in rare cases, debilitating or fatal.

Imaginary parasites might be the defining delusion of the 21st century. Whether it’s the fictional Morgellon’s which have been stock-in-trade hallucination among the yeti-and-UFO set for years, the use of horse dewormer to try and treat COVID, or the literal worm that apparently ate out part of RFK. Jr’s brain and has since left only a shadow on an MRI, we are haunted by the negative space where we seem to want parasites to be. We’ve even started talking about delusions or techno-socially induced delusions as “brain worms”.

Even before AI, social media warped the information we saw and spread lies and misrepresentations like wildfire. In a sense, AI is just a virulent new strain of the kinds of psychic parasites we’ve been increasingly suffering from over the past few decades."

I wrote this a few months ago, but conversations with @eigenvalue.bsky.social and @shibbi.bsky.social impelled me to post it.

There are only two bug classes left: complexity and memory safety.

CurveBall (CVE-2020-0601)? Complexity.
BigSig (CVE-2021-43527)? Memory safety.
Log4Shell (CVE-2021-44228)? Complexity.
BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708)? Memory safety.

Heartbleed looks like memory safety, but it's actually complexity.

I am eternally grateful to the person who many years ago liberated a dose of tetanus vaccine for me when I sliced my scalp open on a rusty awning.

Whenever I see some idiotic LLM "feature" like this I always think of this amazing @mattielubchansky.com comic.

My brother is a mechanic and he jokes that the club is just a sign reading "You Must Own a Drill to Steal This Car".

Hey now, they may not be able to count letters, but at least LLMs also randomly attribute completely made up quotes.

I'm at a Year of the Cobra show and one person in the pit is wearing yellow and it's blinding by contrast because everyone else is in black.

I have used Bloom filters exactly once in my professional life and it was because of process memory limitations on the DOS system on a shitty handheld radio. It was one of my proudest coding achievements at one of the lowest points in my career.

I'm aura farming (reading Dashiell Hammett novels and pondering if I should become a private detective).

It's just a single, two-hour loop of Gina Davis' shot glass scene from A Long Kiss Goodnight.

This argument from Altman is stupid sophistry, of course. But I think it shows that the VC class has gone beyond "the ends justify the means" to "there is no difference between means and ends". Everything is a tool with no purpose, people included. No purpose of course, save their own petty desires.

I'm generally anti-bullying, but this picture caused me to make involuntary "stuffing in locker" motions.

To quote someone cleverer than I: "There's a reason they don't call him Thomas Thinkerton Williams"

I did pretty much exactly this in my will and my partner was like "great, cremation, easy". Highly recommend finding a partner that with strong opinions and a decisive nature. (Also, read marrowmagazine.com/all-the-ways... for more about me trying to dispose of my own body.)

Pic of Pontevedra from the air.

“It's not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me it's the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you're going to put them.” — Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain (re-elected 6 times)

This thread is very well put. I'm a lefty anarchist through-and-through but, like, I'm well aware that I'm going to live and labor under capitalism until I die. Folks shouldn't feel bad about getting money however they can in order to push that death date further into the future.

Not just _Crash_, no. A lot of his work deals with the sublimation of suburban tedium into violence. A great place to start on both his works and that theme is _High-Rise_.

CTRL+F "house rules". The author of this piece has never played D&D. If people want the non-woke stuff back in, they'll just put it back in. I come bearing this message on behalf of every table who has completely ignored encumbrance rules for the past several decades.
