Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

My sculpture Chronic Emergency. 🚨 it inflates and deflates to the rhythm of 4-7-8 breathing; the breaths you take for a panic attack, and it is pink.

… only non-commercial/ critical work “counting” as “real” becomes self-reinforcing, to the exclusion of working class art (other than very fucking problematically labelling it as “outsider art”- how charming).

… that you are a worker. That what you do is work. Making things, even if it is pleasurable, counts as real work, and to believe otherwise is internalized capitalism.
Where we get hung up is in the idea that it is a privileged choice to make art at all; to the extent that the class dynamic of …

…labour of some form or other, but in most BFA programs the critical discussion can scare students away from pursuing commercial work for fear of “selling out” or diluting our criticality, as if without diligence we are all in danger of becoming Jeff Koons.
Just understand, fellow artists, …

…of perspectives and experiences we need to drop the classist bullshit gatekeeping. We need to allow for artists to both sell work that sells, doing their work, as well as making critically engaged work that may or may not have commercial potential. As it stands most of us have to hold down waged..

The implied logic of who gets to be “a real artist” is very classist, but pretends not to be. One can be hanging around in Athens somehow and affording to do kind of nothing but they can’t be making small works just to make money.
If we want to see diversity…

Not #OCD like “I’m an nervous flyer so I wear my lucky shoes” but OCD like “I’ve played out every scenario to the end and there is nothing I can do so I’ll just quietly accept the possibility of death and make the most of this sky vacation”.
