Amazing work Gioele et al. Your talk about the lipid brain atlas and how it connects within a grand vision, this morning at VIB.ai, was truly spectacular. We were honoured to hear the story on the day of the preprint :)

Happy to finally see The Lipid Brain Atlas out! Lipids are not boring at all so, check it out!
Amazing team effort between computational and experimental work, led by @lucafusarbassini.bsky.social with @gioelelamanno.bsky.social and @giodang.bsky.social labs. Proud to be part of it.

Such a treat to host @gioelelamanno.bsky.social (EPFL) today and be the first to hear more about his lab's latest work, posted just two days ago on bioRxiv.

Missed the talk?
Here's the preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.10....

With this reference atlas, we can embark on new missions to track how disease, aging, diet, and drugs reshape the brain lipidome at the resolution where change happens.

Through the lipidome, we bring into sharp focus cell-type-specific metabolism and membrane biochemistry, and also glimpse developmental history and connectivity patterns.

- Biochemical zonation of the choroid plexus and ventricular linings.

- Pregnancy triggers coordinated membrane adaptations from cortex to white matter.

- Sex differences in white matter sphingolipids are amplified during pregnancy.

- The lipidome alone can predict 3D coordinates of brain tissue.

- Oligodendrocytes are lipidomically heterogeneous in the corpus callosum.

- In the gray matter, many lipizones capture cell-type territories.

- Lipid signatures connect cell bodies to distant axon terminals across the brain.

!!!We found that lipids act as zip codes for fine-grained brain anatomy!!!

โœจ Specifically, we discovered:

- #LIPIZONES: brain territories defined purely by lipid composition, no anatomical priors needed.

๐Ÿง  The Lipid #Brain Atlas is out now! If you think #lipids are boring and membranes are all the same, prepare to be surprised. Led by @lucafusarbassini.bsky.social with Giovanni D'Angelo's lab, we mapped membrane lipids in the mouse brain at high resolution.

Two life sciences ERC Starting Grants at EPFL Milena Schuhmacher and Gioele La Manno at EPFLโ€™s School of Life Sciences have received European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants. Former EPFL researcher Can Aztekin (now at Max Planck), is also ...

I am deeply honoured to have been recognized by the European Research Council with a #StartingGrant. @erc.europa.eu

With this support, my team and I will launch #MOVIOLA. Our goal is to understand how human neural progenitors decide their fate during brain development.

Excited to share #uMAIA, our method to create 4D lipidomic atlases, now published in @natmethods.nature.com

We demonstrate that with uMAIA, the field is ready for atlas-level analyses capable of uncovering histological metabolic heterogeneity in both space and time. [1/2]
