The Luxon Govt has systematically undermined NZ efforts to cut climate pollution and reduce fossil fuel use. We now face an energy shock due to high dependence on fossil fuels and a cyclone (made worse by climate change). Time to change course.
Winston Peters smirks as Marco Rubio walks away from the question: "Is wiping away a civilisation a war crime, Mr Secretary?"

Meanwhile, on the moon...
Fast track concerns. 4000 homes. On rural land. With no planned infrastructure. A large part of it in a flood plain. Strong opposition from council. Still approved.
Interview here: Papakura Chair Kelvin Hieatt speaks for the first half and me in the second half. www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro...
Shane Jones shut down NZ Involvement in road map away from fossil fuels
The current NZ Govt parties have opposed all efforts to reduce NZ's dependence on fossil fuels. All three coalition parties have received large donations from at least one oil company. They are making the climate crisis worse and the cost of living crisis worse.
Who benefits from Nats/Act/NZF #FossilFuel energy policy? Oil companies. And who just gave Nats/Act/NZF a $100k each? Oil companies- Greymouth Petroleum. And who pays the price? Ordinary people w higher cost of living. And we have to pay extra tax for the LNG import terminal.
The Govt claims to be pro-market yet: $200m subsidy for oil exploration; Uncapped subsidies to decommission old oil fields; $1billion subsidy for LNG imports; Fonterra faces zero price for emissions under ETS. There is a pattern here. They are using the state to support and subsidise pollution.
so they're covering the nz couple who ran facilities... still no Pinker or Thiel in ANY stories though... Pinker is speaking TONIGHT on invitation of the FSU (wonder how many ACT folks et al will be in attendance) but it seems like more prominent associates of Epstein are a protected species in NZ
MBIE has announced the board members of Research Funding New Zealand, the new org that will make funding decisions for NZ's "major public investments in science, innovation and technology"
My initial response: 😬🤔🙄WTF
Why are three of them Aus-based? Why such a strong Agri lean? ⚛️🧪👩🔬

The Power of Poetry with things falling apart and anarchy let loose, it was only poetry, he found, which had any use, so he reached for his copy of The Complete Works of Yeats and bludgeoned the President of the United States Brian Bilston
Here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
"Contacted for a response, the prime minister's office referred RNZ to Peters' Post on X."
Our absent PM everybody:
Don't see the new Aotearoa NZ histories curriculum online yet. But Act are already crowing about having gutted it.

#nzpol Labour is proposing to create a Capital Gains Tax on property - excluding farms and the family home. That income will help make GP visits free for the majority of people. Is that a better policy than continuing tax-free profits on, say, someone's seventh property? Absolutely. A🧵
Shame on this government for the deeply racist Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Amendment Act, just passed into law.
Could I politely suggest, that with how Arts & Humanities research funding has been pulled from all of these, that political interference has already occurred.
refusing to recognise Palestine statehood wasn't enough for Simon Court; now he wants to stop MPs from using the word genocide to describe...GENOCIDE. fuck this guy and fuck the 'Free Speech (except when we don't like what you're saying)' ACT party.

My story in this week's Listener tracks impacts of the Trump administration's cuts on research in Aotearoa, from vaccine studies to climate change. More great stuff in the magazine, also online (albeit paywalled). Free to read on Libby if you have a library card!

Norway puts our backtracking to shame:
Norway’s uptake of EVs is nearly 100%. August set a new record of 98.4% of all new sales (with plug-in hybrids a mere 1.5%). The government has a goal of ending the sale of fossil-fuelled cars by the end of this year.

#nzpol Monthly employment data - and there are 4,814 more jobs than this time last month! Whoop. Only 42,746 to go to get us to where we were at the last election. 62 jobs lost every single day of this government, one roughly every 23 minutes. A 🧵
