Before going to sleep on flight day 5, the Artemis II crew snapped one more photo of the Moon, as it drew close in the window of the Orion spacecraft. Orion and the four humans aboard entered the lunar sphere of influence at 12:37 a.m. EDT on April 6, at the tail end of the fifth day of their mission. That marked the point at which the Moon's gravity had a stronger pull on the spacecraft than the Earth's. Artemis II's closet approach to the Moon will come on flight day 6, as they swing around the far side before beginning their journey back to Earth. About an hour after entering the lunar sphere of influence, Artemis II Mission Specialist Christina Koch said, "We are now falling to the Moon rather than rising away from Earth. It is an amazing milestone!"

I didn't quite realize how much I missed the idea of a rocket launch that was:

1) wasn't being broadcast like a tech convention product demo
2) had actual stakes & objectives

it’s nice to see a rocket go up to space that isn’t directly associated with some horrible billionaire piglet

It’s kind of amazing to consider how much more inspiring a moon launch could have been if we had not started a new war just weeks before it. There are lots of other ways everything is stupid right now, but I just need to take a second to shake my damn head over that one.

I don’t think anyone else in this hotel bar has any idea there is a moon launch happening right now. Human spaceflight really has only one purpose and that’s inspiring people to accomplish formerly impossible things. We are not doing this right if no one knows about it.

I do think that those lawyers and law professors who tried to fabricate a historical or legal case against birthright citizenship should be socially and professionally ostracized for their shocking cynicism and intellectual dishonesty as well as for their bald hostility to pluralist American values.

Title/author list/abstract of the paper. The abstract reads: The photon ring of a Kerr black hole decomposes into a self-similar hierarchy of subrings. Here, we show that this self-similar structure persists in phase space. Moreover, near the photon shell of bound photon orbits, dynamics are controlled by a Lyapunov exponent γ, whose role we highlight by computing the first-return map for light rays close to an unstably bound orbit. Despite an exponential e^γ sensitivity to initial conditions, nearly bound rays do not exhibit chaotic behavior. However, as the background spacetime is deformed away from the Kerr geometry, chaos sets in, with its first onset most visible near strongly resonant bound orbits in the photon shell. We display two animations: one illustrating the emergence of chaos near the photon shell, which results in a fractal phase-space structure, and another exhibiting how this chaotic, fractal, self-similar structure is encoded in the first-return map.
