Yea, idk how they did it but the magic of older games is just unparallel to current games for some reason..
After collecting feedback I decided to return to first person (not shooter). At least now I have more knowledge on how sprites work on #Playdate (BTW the hand is a placeholder).
The collision code is still barebones so I will to work on that next, then I can iron out the traversal mechanics.
In case you're curious about how it feels on the actual Playdate... It's a bit difficult with only one hand, but it looks and plays great ๐ธ
The best thing is that the pipeline to work on the handheld is so good I can focus on the actual prototype and I don't lose time fighting tools, SDKs or bugs.

I could probably reduce the framerate some more if i didn't render the player and entities as models ngl, but i wanna have that full 3D experience is the issue...

My 3D Engine just recently started hitting like 25 fps, yet I've been working on it for like 5 months now!!!
Trying the new player movement and a quake level running on #Playdate
With only a d-pad and two buttons, it's not easy to design 3D controls that feel good, but I think I'm getting there.
I also started experimenting with jumping. I mean, Jumping Flash and Metroid Prime made it work, so why not? ๐
Worked on the character traversal today. Jumps, running steps and ledge grabs are now working in the sandbox. Still very early WIP, with no animations, but it already feels so good to control on the #Playdate
Do you plan to make this engine like open source or capable of having custom community levels for it????
Also you should totally join the discord server for the playdate to show this stuff off in the 3D channel too!!!

Been working on my 3D Engine for a good while now.. got a lot of progress done over a good chunk of time..
Updated the model loading, map loading/swapping, animation system ( it uses vertex animation with no interpolation )!
A lot of refactors got made just to make this work!
