A hanukiah, lit for the first night of Hanukkah, in front of a window.

We are called upon to place our hanukiahs outside the front door or in the window; “in a time of danger, placing it on a table will suffice.”

This should not be a time of danger. It must not be a time of fear.

Happy Hanukkah.

The World Is the Wrong Shape for Women - Amy Julia Becker Leah Libresco Sargeant on her book The Dignity of Dependence, exploring today’s debates about men, women, equality, embodiment, and what it means to honor our human neediness

In a culture that prizes autonomy, dependence can feel like loss. But dependence is not a flaw. It is part of what it means to be human. Leah Libresco Sargeant talks with me about how to live in the dignity of dependence: amyjuliabecker.com/feminism-dep...

2/ When remotely pushed on any of the harms of feminization, Andrews has to basically reorient her argument to something she thinks the audience wants to hear, because there's no evidence of the original claims (women are bad vets).

I was Catholic while at 538 and for several years before dating my husband.

I’m only here sporadically!

I’m skeptical that Zohran can deliver on his headline promises, but he clearly
-loves NYC
-wants to find solutions, not explain who’s to blame
-constantly trying to win over opponents with a positive vision vs lead one faction against another

I wish my Dad lived long enough it. He’d have loved it

Getting an answer to that q was my one goal! It’s not meant as a gotcha.

Helen hadn’t done any live discussions with a skeptic until this point, and her essay got a lot of play. I felt I was very well positioned to ask tough questions she hadn’t otherwise been asked.

I think it’s obvious you and I disagree on some big things (like abortion) but my day job is working both sides of the aisle to increase material support for families.

And you sure can’t get there with a position of naked contempt for women a la Andrews.

If you’re gonna claim, as Helen does, “The rule of law will not survive the legal profession becoming majority female” then you should be actively and urgently curious about what protective factor is keeping veterinary medicine on track!

I mean, I’m on the pod specifically because I think Helen’s argument is wrong and I wanted an in person fight about it.

I’ve worked at for-profit businesses, but at the start up ~80 employees phase. I did run HR at one though.

@kristenvbrown.bsky.social In your blue baby bust story, do you know what tool your source was referring to here?

“doctors stopped the bleeding with the help of a device that can also be used in abortions”

It’s a wild mix of easy (no shoes) and huge (homeschooling) choices.

Lots of this is doable working or not. Some bits (no vaccines) don’t conflict with working, they’re just bad!

Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."

It's worth pointing this out because this is summer in Australia i.e. fire season. Historically the us, Australia and iirc Canada have shared resources and personnel which you know we're not in a great position to do right now since California is taking in firefighters from other states

In This Industrial Design Class, Students Eat Their Homework (Gift Article) The Rhode Island School of Design uses recipes to teach the trial-and-error process of tweaking and refining a product.

This is a lovely article on exploring iterative design through cooking.

And not bad as a way to approach New Year's Resolutions—embracing an iterative process, curious about where you'll end up.

In college it’s easier to take ownership of a big project (eg directing a play) which makes it waaaay easier to judge someone’s suitability as a spouse/how they function amid chaos
