Effective 2025 federal tax rates paid by these corporations:

Alphabet: 8.01%
AT&T: 4.6%
Meta: 3.57%
General Motors: 3.09%
Amazon: 1.37%
Exxon Mobil: 1.31%
Disney: -1.57%
CVS Health: -3.88%

Income tax rate paid by the typical American: 14.5%

This is what a rigged system looks like.

'Damaging, potentially life-threatening' Cyclone Vaianu increasingly likely to hit NZ MetService is now very concerned about the system which is expected to deliver strong winds and rain.

If only we had some sort of "fund" that could help with "resilience" for things like "climate emergencies".

Inside Christopher Luxon’s Pacific trip: Michael Jones, visas, dancing, and what really happened with his matai title Christopher Luxon travelled to the Pacific as a prime minister and returned a Samoan chief

Pacific peoples should be able to travel to Aotearoa to visit their family without needing to jump through bureaucratic hoops to get a visitor visa approved. Otherwise all this talk from Govt saying we are a part of a family of Pacific nations is just that. All talk.

Let there be as much outrage from politicians in Washington when kids go hungry as there is when I break bread with New Yorkers.

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kākāpō chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!

Fifty years after New Zealand stopped whaling, humpback population showing signs of recovery Breeding is getting more competitive, suggesting the population is growing, a new study shows.

This is a marvelous change not only for the Humpback whale 🐋 population but for all of us. We need to keep our gentle giants from going extinct.

The Government is currently negotiating an Enhanced Border Security Partnership with the US Department of Homeland Security that would grant US agencies, including ICE, automated, direct access to New Zealanders' biometric data and identity records.

Criminalising homelessness isn't the answer - it's a cruel distraction from real solutions.

The government's announcement to expand "move-on" orders across Aotearoa is deeply concerning.

The following skeets on why this approach sucks.

'Threat to life': State of emergency declared across entire region as low rapidly deepens People are strongly urged to take this seriously and prepare now.

Tragically I think 11 people have already died in Aotearoa this year because of extreme weather. We need to reduce our emissions and invest in climate adaptation with urgency. But naturally, this government is instead pursuing coal mines and an LNG terminal. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/weather-l...

At this rate, how long is it before climate change pushes Aotearoa into a constant State of Emergency?

At what point does recovery become impossible?

I don't currently have the words for my anger and frustration seeing climate events happen all over the motu and knowing - we could have been better prepared. We could have made different choices. People don't have to die.

I'm trying terribly hard to not be bitter.

Restarting oil exploration, importing LNG fossil gas and expanding the dairy industry is climate extremism.

Washed away road leaves farmers ‘stressed’ and cut-off with thousands of litres of milk to be dumped Stranded: there’s no way in and no way out for a dairy farming family after heavy storms cut off their rural road.

After YEARS of having the dairy industry denying, delaying and diluting any effort to cut their climate emissions, the irony is excruciating.

Importing gas locks NZ into fossil fuels for longer – just as clean energy surges Even as the US steps back from Paris and New Zealand flirts with imported gas, the global energy transition is gathering speed.

Luxon's mad plan to start importing gas locks NZ into fossil fuels for longer – just as clean energy surges.

It's absolutely BONKERS!

With the same investment in rooftop solar panels and batteries, we could have cheaper electricity, a more resilient grid and a more reliable energy supply.

A climate emergency fund would be useful right about now.

Oh, that's right, Luxon canned it so he could funnel more money to landlords.

"In my experience, academic work that acknowledges racism, inequality, oppression & climate injustice is in no way easier than any other form of learning. It is oftentimes harder, more complex, as it is fighting against the grain, and THAT is exactly why we need to bring care to our teaching."

I think it is important to not say "Britain colonised Nigeria(or similar entity)", but rather "Nigeria is a creation of the British Empire." This feels like a small difference but I think it fundamentally changes how we respond to the challenges of history and the present.
