I am still on my social media hiatus but logging in to share the response of my friend @hpollingalay.bsky.social to the Omer Bartov NYT piece.

Today I think of the brave, beautiful people in Budapest marching for queer rights. This is not about Hungary, this is about a horrible tendency that is spreading.
I heard that too but how the hell could that be based on the wording of that release? I’m still worried too.
This would be far more restrictive than Russian archival policy, if it's what people are speculating it might be.
🗃️ Re: forthcoming restrictions on access to National Archives at College Park:
Is it possible for @historians.org @oah.org @iehs.bsky.social and other associations to do the same as @mjfuhlhage.bsky.social👇🏽?
Oh: and also file a lawsuit?
Definitely file a lawsuit.
Seriously. @historians.org we do expect you to do something for real.

Yes that’s the one— supposedly the oldest in Berlin. 700 yrs old?
There’s also the tree along the Ludwig Jahn Sportpark which is where the first Sammlung that led to the 1848 uprising. And the oldest is I think in the Tegeler Wald?

Part of the idea is to showcase some of the newest research from newer voices in the field, but also to provide a bookend to Kathy Pence and Paul Betts’ 2008 “Socialist Modern”. Two of the contributors, Bri Smith & Tom Smith (no relation) will be at the launch to talk on their research on the GDR.
Hey all— New edited volume just appeared, “Socialist Subjectivities: Queering East Germany under Honecker”. The editors, Katharine White and Scott Harrison are hosting a virtual book launch this Thursday 4 pm ET. I’ll be moderating (and I wrote the conclusion!!!). Please join! Link is below ⬇️
Thanks for this and please thank him for his work. Somehow a lot of this isn’t coming through in standard media reporting.

A few tips for NEH grantees:
1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP.
2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,
Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements
