Data Centers now account for ~7% of US power demand
Posts by Phaedra C. Pezzullo
The central projection for electricity demand from data centres remains close to the trajectory set out in the IEA’s 2025 report. Our updated projections see electricity consumption from data centres roughly doubling from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030, accounting for around 3% of global electricity demand by that date. Electricity consumption from AI-focused data centres grows much faster than overall data centre electricity consumption, tripling in this period. Bottlenecks across the value chain, however, are reducing the likelihood of more aggressive near-term scenarios, despite booming investment and surging project pipelines. The mid- to longer-term outlook for data centre electricity demand sees a possible upside. Investments in relieving bottlenecks across energy equipment and chip manufacturing, and rapid uptake of energy-intensive use cases of AI, raise the prospect that there could be an even higher upside case after 2030. The IEA will continue to update its projections regularly.
The @iea.org has, rightly, stopped downplaying data centre growth by presenting as a "small percentage" of total power demand growth.
By 2030, power consumption from 'AI data centers' will TRIPLE, in their 'base' scenario.

Windmills. Still keeping Trump up at night.
At a time when the science is clear, and action is overdue, the Trump administration’s STOMP initiative—aimed at measuring and removing microplastics from the human body—is a convenient distraction that delays real action.
We do not need more studies to understand microplastics in our bodies. We need policies that prevent them from getting there in the first place.

This story is a part of "Power Hungry," our latest package on the AI oligarchs who are upending communities over their plans for massive data centers across the country.
Check it out:
Amazon agreed to pay $20.5 million to settle allegations that its data centers in Morrow County contributed to nitrate pollution in community groundwater.

"Even as they debated the Obama plan’s possible burden on the power industry, in the entire chain of correspondence obtained by The Times, not a single justice … mentioned the dangers of a warming planet as one of the possible harms the court should consider.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...
You should read this in full, but in short, John Roberts and the other Koch plants on the Supreme Court blew up the Supreme Court to protect the fossil fuel industry from climate regulation.

First, the NAACP challenged xAI's permit to build a giant, nat. gas-burning power plant in Southaven, MS. Then, they sued xAI alleging Clean Air Act violations. Now, Dem. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is investigating the EPA over apparent inattention to xAI's pollution. Bkgd: www.cnbc.com/2026/04/14/e...

🚨BREAKING: The California Supreme Court permanently disbarred John Eastman — a key architect in President Donald Trump’s failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election — delivering one of the most consequential professional penalties yet for an election denier. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...
JUST IN: John Eastman, the conservative attorney who helped devise President Trump's last ditch strategy to overturn the 2020 presidential election, has officially been disbarred, per the California Supreme Court:
WOO! John Eastman has been OFFICIALLY DISBARRED.
Lol--can you imagine???
I look forward to the Benson Center's plan for how to hire people who will not be disbarred for their conduct as Visiting Scholar of Conservative Thought.
I also await explanation of how their hiring process does not discriminate on the basis of "political affiliation or political philosophy".
