I personally prefer the past tense as I can more easily immerse myself in the story. I find it difficult to read/write first person; first person in the present tense would be even tougher. It's almost as if it were too immediate, too present lol to be imaginable?

His life, it seemed, was about to become significantly less quiet.
And for the first time in years, he was absolutely delighted by the idea.
He watched her until she turned the corner and heard the resounding crack of apparition. The street felt different now, as if the night had folded in on itself and rearranged things.
Draco let out the last breath of smoke, dropped the cigarette to the ground, and crushed it beneath his shoe.
She held his gaze for a second longer, then slipped her wand inside her clock and turned without a word, her heels echoing against the cobblestones.
She didn’t look back.
Draco smiled then, not kindly, but not cruelly, just truthfully.
He gave the faintest nod, one that said he would allow her that win, just this once.
Her expression barely changed, but something in her shoulders gave, something almost imperceptible.
She looked at him for a long beat, eyes unreadable in the low light, and when she spoke again, her voice was quieter.
‘No, Malfoy…’ she said, almost to herself.
‘I’m worse.’
For a moment, he considered her words and how he could turn them into a sharp rebuttal, but ultimately he didn’t.
Instead, he looked at her plainly and said what surprised even himself.
‘We’re the same, Granger.’
‘I think you’ve waited a very long time to have something to hold over me.’
The light tone now gone, leaving space for the quiet calculation of someone who had already pictured the damage this would cause, and was simply waiting for it.
Draco tilted his head, studying her.
He watched her for a moment, the edge of his mouth lifting slightly as he tapped ash from the cigarette and let it fall between his feet.
‘You think I like to make trouble,’ he said, not accusing, just amused. ‘You think wrong.’
Her jaw shifted, and the grip on her wand tightened, just slightly. She stepped forward, slow, but deliberate. The cloak moved with her, brushing against her thighs.
‘You will be discreet, and forget about this,’ she said, the tone light, but the warning beneath it unmistakable.
He gave a small huff of breath, not quite a laugh, but something close. ‘Only when the subject’s interesting.’
Her eyes narrowed slightly. ‘Nothing for you to see here.’
‘That depends on what you think I’m looking at. Or better, who.’
