In case anyone is wondering what killed journalism (in part), it was Google AI summaries. Most users are reading them instead of clicking onto human-written articles.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out when the AI has less content to mine for its summaries, eh!

It’s okay. It was literally everyone all at once. The whole department - gone.
Anyway, here's another link to my weans as I try to put on my big lassie pants and make the best of it.
Also, my year of travelling around is over. Journalism made that possible, but it is what it is.

While I'd LOVE to be a full-time author, and I think it's possible one day, it looks like life wants me to keep being inspired by a day job too - it's just not going to be journalism anymore.
Now it's time to focus on what's next. It will be a total career change that I'm not going to share publicly - this is different as my writing and journalism were always linked.
But I need to keep fighting, because my books are good and I'm not passing them over to the robots.
So... I got made redundant today because of AI.
I knew it was coming. It still hurts though. I had such a good run as a journalist, from uncovering a website that got a food bank nearly £30,000 in donations to giving the world more quirky stories than I can even remember.
🚨 Lassie scrievin in the Scots leid needs yer help 🚨
I am really, really going through it right now because of circumstances totally out of my control. If you want to support real, HUMAN art in a minority language, please buy one of my books from @luathpress.bsky.social!

The important bit!
‘Cathy, get yer Dancin Shoes Oan’ is different because it’s been my baby for a decade. But it would be nice to think that even when I don’t feel like myself, I can still make wee people happy with my stories.
I feel like I’ve lost my spark in life, but apparently ‘The Puddock Wioot A Pond’ is my best children’s book yet. We shall see, I guess.
Don’t worry. The third novel is next. They just take a lot longer to edit. 🥹 #CathygetyerDancinShoesOan

Mercifully, I’m okay for now as a journalist, but the bottom line is that the industry is falling apart, revenue is dropping and most people will have to pivot.
Still working away. A new piece of Scots journalism is on the way and I’ll be able to give you a book update hopefully next week!
I also think it’s best to only be logged onto social media for very brief periods at the moment - to promote the books and support you lovely lot. The world is a mess and my head is struggling more than my body ever could, so it’s important to take precautions.
I’m so sorry for the radio silence. While I’m taking a break from writing after finishing *two books*, I’m still doing *some* bits and bobs.
However, my body decided to get sick and I’m on eight doses of penicillin a day right now. I’m hoping the medicine works its magic soon!
