And this super fun, often quite intense discussion on Presidency (U)Pending. Sharing the YT version so you can see mine and @clarecorbould.bsky.social fail to control our faces in response to unironic use of the phrase âwoke hegemonyâ youtu.be/5pgu8KfT9_E?...

Made me laugh.
Struck by Reich's recollection of a 1973 Yale law class:
"Hillaryâs hand was always first in the air....perfect answers, whole paragraphs...I was awed.
...when called on, my answers were meh.
Clarenceâs hand was never in the air. I donât recall him saying anything, ever.
Bill was never in class."
Thanks, Matthew!
Hoooray! So damn glad this one has come back. âCheck it out, check it outâ, as that orphan in the Blues Bros said âŚ
Correction + Add to myFT Correction: BrenĂŠ Brown Researcher BrenĂŠ Brown was misquoted in an interview published on April 6. She described herself as "solidly in my fuck it era" rather than "solidly in my fucking era".
why not both
Thanks, Anna. I did learn during lockdowns that I apparently have quite expressive eyebrowsâŚ! Perhaps the others do, too.
This is a great discussion and worth watching on Youtube if you can, the facial reactions are half the debate!
Presidency Upending, the podcast I co-host about US politics, has launched for season 2. Zim and I open with a *lively* discussion with Emma Shortis (Australia Institute) and Timothy Lynch (Uni Melb). Find it wherever you get your pods, or here: podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/p...
the mid-20th century "lost" novels of William Demby, Catacombs and Beetlecreek, have just been released as audiobooks, narrated by the always-compelling Dominic Hoffman.
16 hours per day, Epstein enjoyed âwork release.â His âworkâ? Running a foundation heâd recently set up. His âreleaseâ? Sex in the jail carpark with a model he met when she was a teenager. Words fail me.
On the "Fresh Air" podcast, I listened to historian Rhae Lynn Barnes discuss her book "Darkology." She said that the expression "Make America Great Again" can be traced back to blackface minstrel shows. It was a call to go back to the pre-Reconstruction South when black people were "happy" slaves.
Rhae Lynn Barnes's book, DARKOLOGY, about all-pervasive blackface in 20th century American life is now available. I am quite sure something similar could be written for Australia.

"The group nodded thoughtfully, as book people do." A fun, considered review of something that sounds at first ridiculous: paying (a lot) for cheffy food and the opportunity to read a novel aloud, in a group, for a weekend.

Trump advisers think the age of imperialism ended because of wokeness, not because 1) colonized peoples made colonialism untenable 2) technology made territorial empire unnecessary. They thought mere brutality and perceived genetic superiority would make wars against countries like Iran easy.
Jeff Bezos has $222 billion.
If he paid my wealth tax this year, we could fund insulin in America for everyone who needs it plus free school lunch for every kid in Texasâand have plenty of money left over.
And Bezos would still have $215 billion dollars to spare.
I guess the pin is indeed mightier than the sword.
She crossed my mind, too.
who are we casting for the film version? Streep, with Tucci as the doctor sidekick, if they hadn't already done Devil Wears Prada. Jean Smart might work. But I'm getting Geena Davis vibes. Because why not.
The thing about white supremacy is that itâs a receding horizonâit can never be accomplished and maintained. So what youâll get is increasing infighting among the elites of this sect as to whoâs truly white, whoâs the right kind of Christian, whoâs a real man, that will exclude more and more people.
Eleanor Rooseveltâs new york state gun permit from August 5th 1957. She is elderly with a fur stole, listed as writer and lecturer
Eleanor Rooseveltâs gun permit (which she got it around the time the klan put a $25k bounty on her head). What a vibe
JPG quoting W. E. B. Du Bois: 'I remember once offering to an editor an article which began with a reference to the experience of last century. âOh,â he said, âleave out the history and come to the present.â I felt like going to him over a thousand miles and taking him by the lapels and saying, âDear, dear jackass! Donât you understand that the past is the present; that without what was, nothing is? That, of the infinite dead, the living are but unimportant bits?â'
You and me, both, Dr. Du Bois. You and me both.
I have said this before, but eliminating programs that teach a lot of students but donât have many majors is like a restaurant not buying flour in its grocery delivery because people arenât ordering flour on the menu.
Budget models are not neutral admin objects. I tell everyone that the flow of resources reflects your institutional priorities. Changes in budget models are changes in institutional priorities. For example, modeling majors at the college level versus department level is a (deliberate) choice.
Good idea. Iâll donate. Thanks for posting.

Hey. I know cash it tight but if you have a few bucks to throw at the Royal Children's Hospital #GoodFridayAppeal, it really makes a difference to the care available for kids, and research into childhood diseases. Donate via the QR code/ link in alt Anything I er $2 is tax deductable in Australia.
Jeff Bezos' Washington Post editorial board endorsed Pam Bondi as a "qualified" and "serious" pick for Attorney General.
Nowhere in the endorsement did they mention that she's a former Amazon lobbyist.
Another reminder that billionaire control of our media is a threat to democracy.
Ofc Trump is firing the unqualified women faster than the unqualified men, but what a stretch it is to try to care about it. Instead, Iâm imagining Pam Gone-di & Kristi Noemployment hanging out together in a kind of purgatory of endless hair-and-makeup application. A Modern Gal Sisyphus situation.
Dr. Kevin Roberts at the Heritage Foundation wrote his PhD dissertation about slavery in Louisiana.
I haven't seen the connection, but looking at this I do! There's definitely something happening in the right wing for them to mirror Black women's work in this way.
Vile. But they are doing it.
