I just bought the only physical encyclopedia still in print, and I regret nothing The still-updated World Book Encyclopedia is my antidote to the information apocalypse.

The kid that created this Mona Lisa at the neighborhood playground has a bright future as an amazing artist!

8 bit screenshot from the original Legend of Zelda. An old man stands between two burning torches inside a dark cave. On the screen in white block letters are the words, It is dangerous to go alone. Take this. Link, in a green tunic and cap, faces the old man as a wooden sword is offered to him. The cave walls are red and patterned in a repeating pixel design.

The Legend of Zelda is 40 years old today. It came out in 1986 for the NES, and when it showed up at friend’s place, you knew it. We all gathered around the TV, someone had a notebook for secrets and maps, and afternoons turned into an adventures.

School Library

Last spring I was laid off from my job. Went all-in as a stay-at-home dad and also started volunteering at my daughter’s school. I’m back at work but still volunteering. I decided that if I won the lottery there’s still nothing else I’d rather do. And the amazing part is that I can do it now anyway!

Amiga 500 Mainboard

Every once in a while I wake up at 3 AM thinking how there might be an old battery leaking and destroying my Amiga 500 mainboard. I finally got around to cracking it open today and was happy to see no battery at all! 🌙🥰💾❤️

Quintessentially the 1980s: This Devo Song playing for the intro of the 1988 Neuromancer game for the Commodore 64. “Some Things Never Change” sounds great on the hugely versatile C64 SID chip, especially realizing this chip predates FM synthesis. This is high art! #Commodore64 #Neuromancer

On Thursday, I stayed behind at my parents’ house while my wife and kids headed home. The plan was to replace the radiator in my parents’ 2015 Sonic and drive it home (for my teenager to have) on Friday before the snowstorm hit. The car is finally fixed but I’m still here. ☃️❄️😁

I have one of these! It doesn’t stick on the breadbin like that without an adhesive pad (dried up decades ago). If you hold this in your hand, the joystick is surprisingly smooth and responsive, like the analog stick on a modern controller. The button position sucks though—too close to the stick.

Serial HAT for Raspberry Pi

Oh man, I could have bolted a DIN rail to my butcher block desk! I just have my cluster sitting on the desk top. I built this during the summer, and it has been a great home tiny lab. I just got this serial communications HAT to play with next.

Hornets’ nest hanging in a tree.

Hornets’ nest hanging in a tree.

The hornets DID return this summer! My daughter found their nest today in a new tree. I’ve been walking under this branch all summer, oblivious to the fact that a hornets’ nest was only 18” above my head! I need to figure out how to preserve the nest this winter. Anyone know how?

My teenager is on day 7 of 11 of his backpacking trek in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico with his Scout troop at Philmont. I got a single “all is well” message with this photo on Wednesday. It looks like a fantastic adventure and I can’t wait to hear the stories! 😊

While earlier versions of Raspberry Pi were not camera shy, Upton said that the issue relates to a photoelectric effect on the device's U16 processor core power regulator. The bare silicon die is hit by the high-intensity light and the semiconductor material emits electrons, causing the device to power down.
"Silicon junctions (the types that are responsible for making diodes and transistors and other such electronic miracles function) can be 'upset' by this photoelectric effect if it is large enough (i.e. if enough light of the right energy [i.e. colour] is fired at them),"

This is fascinating!

Let us know how the scope works out! 25 years ago, I used to dream about this Astroscan tabletop telescope. Couldn’t afford one at the time. Every once in a while I go on a trip where I’d love to have a travel telescope. Was on top of Haleakalā recently and I’d love to take a scope there next time.
