Dorman’s pool this morning. Nothing fabulously rare but several pintail and gadwall, lots of Shelduck, a Marsh Harrier drifted over flushing the ducks, and a Cetti’s Warbler really going for it. Plus I digiscoped this little film of a Little Egret in front of the hide

Good to see they’re still there Ian. And the number of White-fronts seems to be gradually going up and up

I think it’s a hybrid but I am not 100% sure

Tiny forests, huge claims: The evidence gap behind the Miyawaki method for forest restoration To scale up restoration effectively, practitioners and policymakers should prioritize methods supported by robust empirical evidence rather than relying on untested claims. Our findings highlight the...

I often get asked about the Miyawaki method of forest restoration, usually by people who have heard extraordinary claims for it. Morales et al. (2025) have reviewed the evidence and found it to be weak or absent. 🌏🧪🌳🌲 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

@teesbirds.bsky.social does anyone know if Northern Experience Wildlife Tours (that run pelagics out of North Shields) are still operating? Their website is showing trips with spaces available but the booking system doesn’t work and they are not answering emails or the phone

Aldershot? 😂

Thanks Nate. I even think Blue Tits and Great Tits are very underappreciated - very common but also very beautiful

Loved the episode. Also enjoyed the latest one about why birders go where they go - although I got a bit annoyed with the several digs at Western European birds being ‘boring’. Very unjust criticism I think 😊

We’ve got a wildflower walk at Middle Marsh on Sunday (10-12) led by brilliant local botanist Martin Allen. It promises to be really good. Click on the attached link for details and to book

Reed Warbler singing in the reeds by the biggest pond at Middle Marsh just now. The first here since the ponds were dug (we had them occasionally before)

My first visit in ages to South Gare. Very quiet. Most exciting thing was 1 Purple Sandpiper with a Turnstone towards the end of the lighthouse pier

Thanks Richard (see my main replies below) - I would like to share your article on other social media if that’s okay. When was it written? I can’t find a date on it

…huge increase because (probably) of feeding), I wonder what effect they have had there on the birds that were there before

The nest box issue is one I thought of while ready your article so I was interested to see it mentioned towards the end. I’m also wondering about Lesser Spots and whether the huge increase of GSW has been part of their decline. And on GSW- since they’ve colonised Ireland (poss related to their …

Thanks for your replies Richard. Wow, that is definitely food for thought (sorry about the pun). I’ve actually pretty much stopped feeding in my garden but mainly because so few birds come now that the food doesn’t get eaten and goes bad.

Is there actually research to show that connection between increase in Blue tits and Great tits and the loss of Willow Tits? I would have thought reduction in good wet woodland habitat would be a big part of it.

🚨 620,000 songbirds were illegally trapped and killed in Cyprus in autumn 2024 alone.

A new report by @birdlifecyprus.bsky.social reveals mist net trapping is on the rise in the Republic of Cyprus, driven by organised trappers.
