Had fun with EXIT 8, adapted from a minimalist video game where a character walks into a subway tunnel, turns left, then right, and ends up right back where he started.
More mystery and suspense than horror, but definitely see it with an audience!

Throwback rom-com YOU, ME & TUSCANY may not challenge the viewer in any major way, but it is increasingly charming and entertaining, with a wonderful supporting cast.
This is a "pajamas and blanket" kind of movie and the crowd I saw it with had a ball.

Starring Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery, the reimagining of cult classic FACES OF DEATH presents itself as both a finger-wagging commentary on social media and a gruesome slasher flick.
You can't have it both ways. At least not in this film.

The Blair Witch-inspired HUNTING MATTHEW NICHOLS blends true crime with found-footage and builds to an intense final act. There's problems, especially in the first half, but this scrappy underdog effort might be worth the time for patient fan horror fans.

THE DRAMA: Zendaya and Robert Pattinson portray a couple a week away from their wedding, when a situation occurs calling all they know about each other into question.
A24 asked critics not to discuss that reveal. So I didn’t. I also didn’t like the movie very much.

Ryan Gosling, and a unique companion, make PROJECT HAIL MARY a major crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure. Balancing humor with drama in an adaptation of Andy Weir's book of the same name, it is hard to not be entertained from start to finish.

Man, I love that PTA invoked the all-timer year of 1975 in his speech. Go watch all five of those movies! One Battle will last. Sinners will last. Congratulations to all and to all a good night!
My blazing-hot Oscar take is that most of the Best Picture nominees are excellent, most of the nominees in the other categories are excellent and I suspect many deserving people to win tonight. (Alas, this take is unpublishable, even in my own newsletter. And probably in this skeet, too.)
undertone, "the scariest movie you'll ever hear!," is a lackluster movie in execution, logic, and story. An impressive sound mix can creep you out and there's a solid lead performance. Then ... there's everything else.
undertone is now playing at a theater near you.

Pixar's HOPPERS hits theaters, reminding of some of the great Pixar films of the past. A little too frenetic at times, there are still memorable lines, great characters, and a moment that caused our entire theater to gasp in disbelief.
Go be entertained and have fun.

Welcoming a new voice to Should I See It, @cartervanzanten.bsky.social! Carter looks at buzzworthy movie PILLION, starring Henry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård, which expanded into more theaters this weekend.

People born in the 2000s will never understand a nation once so innocent that an ice skater kneecapping another ice skater sent us into an existential crisis.

This. All damn day.
I don't want to celebrate how Ilhan Omar was ready to throw down. Tired of valorizing Black women as fighters, that dude should have been stopped and stomped out before he got close to her.
The newest video shows very clearly that they attacked him for coming to an aid of a woman that the agents pushed, and then executed him while he was immobilized. Everything the government has said, like with Good, has been a complete lie.
16 is the number and takes away those “only will get the record because of the new category” takes that I started seeing.
Incredible that SINNERS now holds this distinction - for so many reasons. A stunning film and viewing experience we will talk about long after awards season comes to an end.

2025 was… a year, to put it mildly. But, it was a great year for cinema. And one of my favorite things to do is cut my year-end Top 25 video. Give it a watch, and see you at the movies! youtu.be/5dWlwXODvH8?...
Time for Mike’s annual failure to maintain and continue consistent use of his Letterboxd.
PRIMATE scratches and claws its way into theaters this weekend as one of the first major new release movies of this new year.
Silly at times and absolutely not for the squeamish, yet somehow far more entertaining than it has any right to be.

What a horrible day for our nation. When will it ever be enough. When?
