I sort of have the opposite problem? I have to turn voice and sound effects down to like 30% in most games in order to hear the music.

In this case, it plays a cacophony (think several keys slammed at once and held) as soon as you turn on an instrument for one of the key sets. The pedals play notes.

I really can't recommend False Skies enough :) The demo alone is like six hours long, the full thing lasts more than 40, there's a fairly deep class system, the music is great, the story is interesting, and it's a steal at the $9 asking price.
