Devastated by this news. Giles was one of the greats in housing law. He made a difference to thousands of individual clients & to millions more by achieving Homes (Fitness for human habitation) Act. A great legacy but too young for a legacy.
Giles was so generous with his time and so helpful when it came to explaining to journalists very clearly and with quotable precision exactly how a wrong un landlord was being a wrong un. But mostly I just remember thinking he was a really, really kind human who cared about the state of others.
This is awful news. One of the original legal bloggers and one of the very best. nearlylegal.co.uk/2026/04/gile...
That’s awful, I’m so sorry. I never met Giles and always wanted to. We started our blogs at the same time as pupil and trainee back in 2006.
Sorry to hear that Jon, that is appalling.
The Home Office has extended the deadline for responding to this call for evidence to 6th May, but hasn't yet updated the webpage or issued public comms. If you want to confirm this, just email IABcallforevidence@homeoffice.gov.uk & you'll get an automated message with the extension info.
Home Office has replaced the paper form for requesting a correction to immigration status records with a new online form (submit.forms.service.gov.uk). Clients can now upload supporting documents digitally. Postal route via Croydon remains available. Updated 20 April 2026.
Long thread alert 🧵
1. The Home Secretary has accepted she has discretion to grant leave on the five-year route without imposing a no recourse to public funds condition. Until now, applicants were told to accept the condition or switch to the ten-year route.
Aggressive deportation tactics are popular in theory, but not when people see the consequences.
excellent piece of litigation. Well done to all those involved @dpglaw.co.uk @tupldn.bsky.social and all those barristers who I couldn't find on here.
Also creates an otherwise absent argument around legitimate expectation, perhaps.
This sort of thing is very irritating. The Home Office are telling people that they WILL be able to apply for settlement after 10 years (this is from a grant under the current 10 year route). Totally irresponsible given the Earned Settlement proposal is a near certainty.

Yes. Especially fewer Eritreans crossing from Libya to Italy (the most common nationality for Channel crossings last year). Also the number of Sudanese and Afghan people entering Europe is down (to a lesser extent). Fewer rejected claims (and fewer claims overall) in Germany may have an effect too.
The number of people crossing by small boat this year compared to last year. The fall is very real and not seasonal. Little difference in numbers during the winter but since numbers increased in spring, half as many people are coming as this time last year. This is mainly because of European trends.
