I worked a little on O157 in grad school. One Wednesday a lab mate didn't come in to work. No one heard from him Thursday, Friday, the weekend. He reappeared Monday 10-15lbs lighter, having been hospitalized the whole time shitting and vomiting himself to death from a lab acquired infection.

Mine was summer '22, went from MPLS to Black Canyon in Colorado, then Capitol Reef, Bryce, and Zion in Utah, then to San Diego, up Route 1 til San Francisco, then cutting back across Nevada to get back. Haven't found the time for something similar since.
